Hi everyone, I am looking to move to a cheaper active setup and was hoping you could help me shortlist active speakers under 1500 pounds. I know AVI ADMs are well recieved but what else is there? Many thanks in advance!

Hi Shaxos.

Well the AVIs are worth a punt based on the fact that you get a pre and DAC in the box too.

Recordspot likes what he's heard of the Genelec 2 way range.

I think Octopo has bought some Mackies and raves about them. Worth a search on here (NB I think it was a very "alcoholic" thread).

Maybe buy a copy of Sound on Sound. This month they've reviewed a pair of Acoustic Energy actives and they come out well.

The AVIs are very good (though consider carefully whether you need to add the sub), but if you could stretch to 2k the PMC DB1S-AII are better (though at twice the cost and less the DAC, you'll notice

And if you can stretch to £11K - and have a very big house - you could have the mighty actives we're reviewing for the next issue

More on those to follow....

Thanks for the replies

Hehe! 11K! You are funny! 🙂 No seriously though im finding my self listening to hifi less and less which is the reason i just want to go to a plug and play active set up. Other things are becoming a priority (holidays, spending money, saving money etc). Im definatly going to have a look at the AVis but am concerned about this lack of bass as ive never liked a sub with my hifi.

BTW lont time no hear iggle! Thanks for the heads up with the mag. BTW When did you change your speakers? Thought you would never part with the sa1s! haha. Hope you enjoy the new setup mate!

Shaxos if you live within striking distance of Bedford you are welcome to listen to my 9.1's with/wthout Sub.

Yes, long time indeed!

I changed my speakers last December and I've written a general review/perspective here. I love them but obviously an audition will help you decide if they're right for you. I find their bass to be stunning but that's just my opinion. Enjoy and keep us posted!
