A Question Of Quality

How much difference is there in products at difference price levels? Say for instance I buy the B&W 685 speaker system (http://whathifi.com/Review/BandW-685-Theatre/)

If I had spent three times the amount on the Jamo system (http://whathifi.com/Review/Jamo-C809-HCS3C80-sub/) would I have got three times the system?

And again if I'd gone B&W 800 (http://whathifi.com/Review/BandW-800-Series-system/) would I have got 15 times the system?

Is it a straight line correlation with money spent and quality of system? Or a very sharp increase in quality at lower money levels which tails off as you get into big money. For instance, from the 685 to Jamo you might well get 3 times better, but moving up from Jamo to 800s you may only get twice as better sound.

The short answer is no. Use your ears and compare a few different systems at various price points within your budget and make your own mind up. The differences between amp and speaker combinations can be pretty distinctive or subtle but speaker choice in particular is very subjective. By all means use reviews and forum opinions as a basis for your research but ultimately it is your system and also depends on room size/shape/furnishing too. Acoustics and positioning tend to get forgotten but a little tweak here and there can drastically change the sound and make any upgrade unecessary (for the time being until curiosity gets the better of you again!).

Hi,

The HiFi / AV market provides a great demonstration of the law of diminishing returns. The more you spend, the smaller the quality improvements become. At the very high end you could wind up paying twice as much for only a marginal increase in quality. Whether or not each upgrade is worthwhile is a value judgement that only you can make (although your Bank Manager may have something to say about it).
