A sad loss indeed, was looking at one to replace my aged Oppo
Even the new boy in town doesn't play discs.....
Definitely a market space available for someone that can actually produce a hi quality universal disc player.

Given that they were a niche company and had only been around since 2021, I suspect 'terrible' is an overstatement. Does make me feel slightly antsy though - my Oppo is absolutely fine, but I would hate to lose 4k disc playback. But I don't see that happening any time soon - the 4k release calendar seems to gradually and steadily get bigger.

Specs/compatibility for the two cheaper Magnetar ones don't seem vary much - looks like audio output and one or two other things - I have the feeling that for anyone with an AV amp there'd be little difference. That said, even the cheapest is £1,400...

Given the fact that Sony have just updated their X700 model, it's far from dead yet. Smaller, niche manufacturers will always be in danger of ceasing manufacture if the numbers don't add up. Same could be said of the big guys, but Sony have their movie division, so while people still buy their physical media, they'll likely continue making players - and they know that not everyone is going to buy a PlayStation to play Blurays.

I wasn't on about bluray in particular I was questioning regarding universal disc players.
Said Sony could not replace my Oppo.

Magnetar as a non-mainstreamer 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player manufacturer, still seems to be going strong and may it long continue.

Aesthetically, Magnetar UDP900 Universal 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player is an awesome looking piece of hardware. Tha asking price, £2.5K is a little excessive cost wise, is it two and half times better than the Panasonic DP-UB9000?

It has a niche market, so it does not need to go toe to toe with competing mainstream brands like Panasonic or Sony. Oppo is no longer in the market, so not much competition at the high end.

Reavon are owned by Groupe Archisoft, who also own R_volution media players. Maybe that's the way they see the future? Who knows?
