its the $64m question , weather your for or against 3d tv , one thing is sure , its on its way , so how much will it cost ??

lets start with sony , they really need a good year , their market share has fallen , and recent quality control issues have not helped , so its a new year , new start , new tech , they need to sell , now , given that many people are of the opinion that watching 3d on a screen less than 50in is not worthwhile , lets try and guess the prices of each makers 50-52in versions , well , one would assume that sonys new screens are going to cost more than the z series , which now costs around £2200 , so im going with £3000 for a 52in sony 3dtv...

next up samsung , doing very well , getting a good name and fanbase worldwide , their current 52in led tvs are also around the £2k mark , assuming again that their new 3d tvs will be a good bit costlier , im going with £2800 for their 52in 3dtv...

but the interesting one for me , is panasonic , they have used the input of the kuro engineers on this years high end plasmas , saving the infinate black pro (hopefully this translates to 9g kuro blacks) for their 3d models , and we all know how good the kuros were , now , given that a 50v10 sells for £1500 , thats 25-35% less than the same class of sony or samsung , one would hope that they will keep that difference in place , so my guess for a 3dtv from panasonic , £2000....

i could be way off the mark , after all they would be undercutting sony and samsung by a great deal , and one might ask why would they do that , they could charge £2400 and still be the cheapest , (all hypothetical of course) but would they then sell enough ?? competition will be fierce this year , the fiercer the better ....

Well, Panasonic gave some hints in a seminar in Japan a few months back, as I reported at the time, but that was a while ago, and I guess we will have definitive (ish) pricing when the big companies start their round of European press launches.

hmmm , interesting , if the 50in is nearly as good as a kuro , with 3d to boot , i couldnt see it being £1400 , but , we live in hope...

A Daily Mirror reporter yesterday in an editorial feature, and also had spent some time at Sky's headquarters viewing the 3D experiemental football footages on the 'Active system',had suggested the price tag of £1000 for a three diamensional TV. It was the first featured article on 3D Tvs in a newspaper. The acompanying 3D glasses are suggested as £50 each.

Sky is looking at the best sources to do 3D in and football is their Ace card. Apparently, watching Football in 3D is as real as being there from the reporter's experiences. So a very big endorsement there.

It has been suggested that it wil take 10 years to have a sytem that doesn't require those glasses to come to the market?

Somehow I don't think the price predictions of a Daily Mirror reporter are going to hold much sway. It is all conjecture and, until trade prices are released and dealers set the retail prices nobody is going to know.

IMHO 3D tv's will end up just being another Betamax and falling by the way side with not many people adopting the new £d gimickery in favour of their current TV.

My main beef with 3D tv is where is the bandwidth going to come for to transmit it. Skys SD signal is poor and we dont have that many HD channels let alone 3D. Sort out whats here now first!

3D tv is getting slated now but when we start getting blu rays and computer games in 3D i think it will take off. I played Vice City in 3D once and it was pretty good. It's all about the immersive experience. I refuse to pay for Sky HD but still get plenty of HD use for my telly from blu rays and games, I think it could be the same with 3D i won't go running to the Murdoch empire for it. It will always be expensive at first so i guess most will wait a while until it is affordable.

theres millions of movies currently out in 2d , and yet on skys movie channels theres nothing but repeats , with only a few dozen 3d movies likely to be out when 3d hits our homes i think paying sky for 3d would be very silly , and obviously boring ...

for me the appeal would be to be able to watch blu-ray 3d movies that you could buy , like the lord of the rings , the matrix etc , assuming they can be converted to 3d ?? anyone ??

also 3d football , boxing etc should look great ,but my guess is sky will sell a 3d bundle , so if your not into sport , and just want movies , you get it anyway , and visa versa , thus for some people , paying for something you dont want , need ...

then of course there will be the pay per view 3d , which like current ppv just lines the pockets of sky and makes multi millionaire boxers etc much richer , what a joke , you pay for sky sports , but have to pay again , for sky sports

, im sure 3d sports will be no different ..

I don't think these 3D tv's are going to cost that much and it look's like with some of them you get the glasses with them.

Can't wait till toy story 3 3D blu ray comes out.

Max,

For the cheap option have a read of my post '2D to 3D Conversion'. We've also had a 3D editing platform on demo called Mistika, which by using a combination of hand painted mattes and depth analysis from the luminance information in the image allows you to place selected objects within 3D space (both negative and positive parallax) from existing 2D material - time consuming but effective (saw a short scene from Star Wars about 6 months ago done this way - was 'interesting' shall we say). Here are some examples of what it involves:

EDITED BY MODS - House Rules

Still not fully convinced and would prefer broadcasters to sort out the problems with HD transmissions before imposing even more pressure on the ever decreasing bandwidth.

Rob

yes i did read that rob , interesting , (and a little complicated) , if it works , it will certainly help to fill up 3d screens with something other than the current few movies etc , although what would one call it , upscaled 3d ?? to go with the 3d ready tvs and full 3d , lol , sounds familiar ....
