Well my opinion is as follows. Firstly to state, i have a VT20.
I was at a friends in London last night and he has a 5090 kuro, not because he is into TV's but because he is loaded and has the best of a lot of things (I've seen this set loads of times ). anyway, he had the set on freeview (no sky etc or any hd) all the footage was sd. The kuro picture was a bit grainy compared to the VT20 with his sd feed and quite pixelated at close watching as the room was configured close to the set - however it was clear that the set was superior to the VT20. the realism of the pictures and the depth of field were superior. In fact I was staggered at the difference as I have read that that new sets e.g. the VT20 have caught up.
I am happy with my VT20 and will keep for a few years hopefully. Maybe the myth surrounding this set took over me? I genuinely went to see him with expectation of recognising the inferiority of his old technology compared to my new set???? would love to see my vt20 fed the same signal to compare
