Something to consider that I've read before and from experience partially agree with (obviously depending on the exact equipment and budget) that a good stereo system is better that a bad multi channel system (also depending on the intended use).

To get the overall quality in a multi channel system as the equivalent stereo system it could cost double or more.

Having said that multi channel amps have come a long way since my first foray into surround set-ups!

+1 to that.

i have read that too,but i want to hear the multi channel mix,so its a multichannel i need...!!

some good folks have suggested a few models, but mainly universal players,as i don't see the benefit of changing my bdp i'm on the look out for a stand alone sacd player, but having seen the 2 channel, which are relativly cheap i think i got a bit confused

Could be said, also, that a good multi-channel receiver + speakers is better than a poor stereo.

Good point PP, hadn’t thought of that.

It must depend on the context of what the system is being used for and the budget.

For example, comparing a £300.00 stereo system to a £300.00 surround system, assuming each is the best for that room at those prices, then the stereo system will win hands down for music replay and might be better for movies also.

Once the budget increases then the surround system will be better for movies easily.

From experience once you start mixing stereo/multi channel systems for the best of both worlds it gets much blurrier!

As the OP has stated though he wants multi channel so it’s a non issue for this thread.

Edit: OP wants to use it for multi channel music not necessarily for movies.

I haven’t demoed a lot of multi channel amps recently.

How do they compare to higher end processor/power systems?

i believe i have a very good multichannel amp, what i want to add is a multichannel sacd player, prefrance for a stand alone unit.

the marantz pearl lite looks the best bet at the moment, giving me the option of playing 5.1 sacd.my style speakers will be the weakest link, although very good in their own right as 5.1 surround, they are not dedicated hifi......hmmm more $

The benefit of changing the BDP would be one box to do everything, the universal players that have been recommended are excellent at being universal.

very true Michael, the oppo you suggested is a great piece of kit,but it will not play blue-ray films any better than(but will load faster) my tiny lil' panny.

however,i believe from what i have read a stand alone will be a better option as regards purely sacd multichannel playback.

that's not to rule out the oppo93 tho,so a side by side demo is needed, once i have some££££

I think you need to demo other Blu ray players, I know that some people on here will say there is no difference between Blu ray players as far as PQ is concerened, but others can.

I used to have a Panasonic player myself, but when i tried the Denon 2500BT the difference was easy to see. I still have the Denon along with the OPPO 95 and the Denon still shines withe the PQ.

I owned a multi channel home cinema for 8 years, and just switched to stereo. I had a Denon SACD/DVD-A which allows me to play multichannel (REM best of it superb in multichannel).

Basically, I believe the choice will depend on how often you are going to enjoy your system as stereo or multichannel. 90% of my usage was stereo (cd, tv, games), while only 10% was used in multichannel (movies, SACD, DVD-A).

For the same budget, sticking to stereo will offer you a much better sound.. Not only for the speakers, but also the amp will be more musical. A month ago, I switched to stereo, and will never look back. I will miss REM in multichannel, which was a pleasure to listen to with a nice up of coffee, but now, I enjoy each time I put any stereo track MUCH more than before.

Hope this helps,

i will have a look, but 24p is 24p surley?but then again my impression is from what i have read, not what i have seen,so your advice is as always most welcome

Bigmoose all of my listening is multichannel, with my current speakers i listen to music in 5.1.

i will be upgrading these in the future,so wouldn't be adversed to adding a seperate stereo amp if required.(most probably will)

i realy want to experiance 5.1 sacd's and i realy enjoy home theater, even make my mrs watch her eastenders in 7.1
