2.1 instead of 5.1 speaker set-up

If my wife insists that our home cinema spakers are grouped together :-( is there any point in having 7.1 or even 5.1 ? Could I just have a 2.1 system and will a new AV Receiver ( ie Yamaha V667 ) run it like that OK ? I could afford better speakers that way !

Also would the Yamaha run a Home cinema system plus 2 stereo speakers( 8ohm) ? or do I need a seperate amp for them , run from the Yamaha ?

If you're running 2.1, you wouldn't actually need an AV receiver - you could run with just a stereo amp. Though at least if you did you could expand to 4.1, 5.1, 7.1 later...

Yes thats what i was thinking and i could initially afford better 2:1 speakers and add to later .Just wondered if the receiver supports 2.1 set up

Wouldn't a 2.1 setup with an AV receiver capable of Pro Logic II give a pseudo-5.1 effect?

Not really. More the other way round - add Pro Logic II to a stereo feed and you get pseudo surround.

Any receiver will support a 2.1 setup.
