Is it possible to use, say, a 7.1 HD receiver to mix 7.1 channel content into 2.1 channels, so I could have a 2.1 channel HD sound setup? The reason I ask is that I would like to have an av setup in a small-ish room, and would like to have the best sound quality, but without having the room filled with speakers and wires.

If anyone knows if this is possible then please let me know.

But in my experience anything other than DVD sounds terrible. Radio, TV, music all sound muffled with a serious lack of clarity.

Do what I did - sell your AV amp and buy a smart stereo integrated amp. I've just bought a NAD 315BEE and it sounds 100% better, plus it has a good range of inputs so it retains that useful connectivity that AV amps have - the front MP3 socket was the main reason I bought it.

As an aside, 2nd hand classic stereo amps are available at amazing prices on Ebay. £80 for a Pioneer A400 and I bought a brilliant Pioneer A-300r for a second room system for just £35.
