The problem with any assessment of environmental impact is the difficulty in judging the overalll effect. For example, a simplistic view would be that a new LP has used up some plastic, probably a derivative of a fossil fuel - oil. Conversely, a download might appear to waste nothing.

However, most downloads need a computer or similar device, decidedly short-lived, full of plastics and rare metals, and heading for a landfill within a few years. Many record players last decades (how many 20 year old pcs are on eBay compared with similar age record players?)

Compared to truly wasteful events like flying to another continent, the impact of just a couple of longhaul flights would probably be greater than everyone on this forum buying new records for the rest of their life!

If the product is already made and sitting on a shelf, the "damage" is done. Enjoy life - not buying a few records isn't going to save the environment.

Demand and supply is where your argument comes unstuck but I otherwise agree.

Personally, I just blame the Chinese for everything :)

I did think of that while typing it, but it'd take quite a while for demand to affect supply. If people stopped everything that hurt the environment, the industrial revolution would never have happened, which is probably one of the greatest effect ever on our environment.

I'm not convinced that what you exactly listen to whether download or vinyl would make much difference.

It's likely that amplification would have the biggest environmental impact. The amount of electricity used daily could massively vary between Class D and Class A amps.

mhmhmhmhmh *ROFL*

What are you laughing at?

Remember science and logic play only a small part in the audiophile world, so just because coconut fibre is non conductive shouldn't matter :D

I'll get my coat :)
