0nkyo 606 and surround sound from tv

if i connect a digital optical or compisite cable from my samsaung 26r87bdx tv to my onkyo 606 would i get surround sound watching normal tv.

With the digital optical, if you're watching stuff encoded with Dolby Surround, yes. The composite cable is input only, and only carries video.
