I've got some John Lewis vouchers through work and am considering treating myself. Unfortunately i'm snowed in today and so can't *** in to John Lewis to see their full range but the Sony HT-IS100 looks decent (if a little overpriced) on their website. I have a PS3 which I understand will decode the HD audio formats for me. I'm really looking for any other John Lewis recommendations or confirmation that the Sony is a decent bit of kit for the price.

Overpriced? Most definitely yes! Why anyone would bother with these when there are far superior home cinema systems out there for the same money or less, is beyond me.

The new Q Acoustics 2000 5.1 Home Cinema Package comes to mind.

I appreciate the reply however, you'll note i'm somewhat tied to John Lewis plus the Q Acoustics (whilst great) is for speakers only!

Great though it is, the Q Acoustics package is only a speaker package, so you would need an amp to go with it. And of course if you're after a small style speaker package, it may well not suit your needs. The final issue being they don't seem to sell it at John Lewis...

Anyway, looking at the John Lewis website with your budget I'd look at the Sony BDV-E300 at only £11 more than the HT-IS100 (it recently got 5 stars and won the group test in the January issue of WHF), but then even this looks overpriced when the Panasonic SC-BT200 looks like more of a bargain at £399 instead (also got 5 stars in the same group test).

The BDV-E300 looks a good shout. Again, better deals to be had on price but won't personally cost me anything will it?

Apologies, my error. I would then go with what the Professor has suggested.

No need. Great suggestion just that my options are slightly limited

Managed to shift the vouchers so now got £500 cash to spend instead! The Jamo speakers look like what i'm after size and style wise. Just trying to find best price now (prob about £250 in brackets). Any ideas on an amp/receiver though? My PS3 will decode the HD audio formats so this isn't essential I don't think. I reckon i'll have approx £250 for the amp and speaker cables.
