Yes, my instinct would be to take the Magnepans over the ADM 9.1's.

I also prefer the sound of Quad ESL's over the 9.1's. Other speakers that I would take in preference to the 9.1's on the basis of sound quality include Yamaha NS 1000's, Bozak Symphonys, Bozak Concert Grands, EV Sentry III's, Altec Model 19's.

If I were buying on the basis of Wife Acceptance Factor, I'd buy the AVI ADM 9.1's. But then I'd also be looking to compare the AVI's against other small speakers such as various models from Royd and Epos ES 14's and KEF LS50's.

You could also look at the Naim UnitiLite all in one steamer/CD player. And a pair of KEF LS50s.

it should be just over your budget, but you can offset this by selling your old gear.

this way you can play your CDs and start experimenting with streaming and Internet radio as you like.
