Hi,
I'm looking at buying my first proper HiFi (and ditching my old sony all-in-one box). I've got a local AV shop that's in the middle of a relocation sale. I want to get a good system with a cd player and a turntable, and my budget is £1000.The guy there has offered me: Pro-ject genie 2 turntable Marantz PM6003 amp Marantz CD6003 Cd player Canton Chrono 520 SL Speakers & accessories cables etc. I heard a CD being played through these speakers and it sounded incredible. I've also looked up prices on the net and it seems like I'd be getting a really good deal. Being new to this, I've never heard of any of these manufacturers, so just wanted some reassurance that this is a good, reliable system? Thanks in advance for any replies. Ben

The Marantz stuff is excellent and, to be honest, I don't think you could better it for the money if solely looking at new kit.

Not sure about the speakers as I haven't heard them. Canton are a decent make but I don't know any more than that. It would certainly be worth trying the Wharfedale Diamond 10.1s as an alternative option.

Looks like a tidy selection, although I'm not familiar with the speakers (no derisory ambiguity intended).

Why not see if you can find references to any of the above in this site's Reviews section?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

The best advice anyone here will give you is: trust your own ears. If a system sounds incredible to you it's a good system.

Having said that: I own the Genie (albeit a 3) and think it's an excellent turntable. The Marantz combo is highly rated by lots of magazines (including this one) and users. And Canton is an interesting choice. It's lesser known in the UK but a well respected brand. The German press rates this model very highly; Audio Magazine found it better than the MA Silver RX2. (Don't mean to spark a debate, just giving a point of reference). Would be interested to hear your opinion when you decide to buy this set.

So yes, if you think it's incredible, go for it. And keep us posted

Jack

Go for it!

I think you'll have a fantastic looking system there, and by your own admission it sounds incredible. Buy and post up some piccies here so we can all enjoy it!

Thanks to all for your advice. I went and bought the system yesterday and am just as happy about the sound of it at home as when in the shop, will post some pictures this weekend. When I looked more into the prices I found that I really was getting a great deal on the ex-demo equipment. If anyone is in the surrey area then check out the sale at sculptured-sounds.com
Thanks again!

I spent a lot of the weekend enjoying my new HiFi. It was so interesting to hear music that I thought I knew so well through such a good system. The sound is so much bigger, more impressive and somehow more expressive.

It's really the detail in the recordings that comes through like they never have before, for example hearing the sheet music being turned in orchestral music, and the intricacies of closely mic'd vocals and acoustic guitars. It makes the music feel so much more alive.

Am looking forward to rediscovering the rest of my music collection!
