Thanks for your reply quadpatch. I thought it seemed too easy. Next question then is - if all I'm after is the digital output to an external DAC, is there any reason to buy anything other than the cheapest dock (as long as it has a digital out)?

This might be a silly question but... An iPod connects to a Mac via USB. A Musical Fidelity M1 (or almost any other DAC) has a USB input. So if all I want is the digital signal out of my iPod, do I really need an iPod dock? Can't I just plug the iPod into the DAC via USB - or does a dock do...
