Record a CD onto a quality Type 2 cassette on a high end deck such as a Nakamichi and you'd be very close.

I'm sure that if you run it through a lab, you'd be right. To my amateur ears, the sound quality is enjoyable.

I've found at lot of really high end decks at car boot sales and flea markets which I was never able to afford (as a young man) back in the day. Having access to a Revox or a Nakamichi proves that you can listen to tapes with high quality sound equalling that of other formats.

A lot of new music is coming out on cassette as well as CD and Vinyl. Check HHV.de and there's a hell of a lot of tapes available proving that there's a market for them. I still listen to tapes on a high end deck and the sound is very good. What's more recording onto a Type 2 ot Metal tape...

I'm lead to believe that the SMSL has a better clocking circuit than the Ultra.

I've just noticed that the only Intput on the SMSL is the USB and the other connections (Coaxial, HDMI and Optical) are all Outputs.

When you say spdif from the Ultra to the SMSL, you mean optical? Also, what output do you then use? Coaxial?

I tried the SMSL (USB from the Wiim Ultra to the SMSL and then optical to the amp) and I honestly found that the RCA out direct to tha amp sounded better.

I'll try this and see if I can hear a difference. Chances are that, with my ears, I won't..

I was convinced by Youtube to try the SMSL PO100PRO inbetween the Wiim Ultra and my Cambridge CXA81. Anybody have experience with this?

I guess I didn't phrase that properly. Which output uses the internal DAC and which output uses the amp's DAC?

Morning all, Got myself a Wiim Ultra over the weekend and am wondering about the DAC situation. As I understand it, dependent on which output you use, it uses either the internal DAC or the external one/the one in the amp. Is this correct and if so, which is best? The amp's DAC or the Wiim's DAC?
