    Spotify vs Amazon Prime music?

If you just want to stream music Spotify is probably the better option - I don't have it myself, but it does have an impressive ctalogue and I believe the quality is good - I'm sure others can commenton this. I do have Amazon Prime, and havent really used the music streaming much - mainly...

Vinyl sales much ado about nothing?

It's undeniable. Vinly is part of a tred at the moment like beards and craft beer. None of this is bad, but all of it could be forgotten very shortly. I don't think it's driven by the desire for better sound - some of the low price decks on offer look absolutely horrible.

    Superb little system

When I try to post it tells me my post is spam half the time. It must sound good Drummerman cause it aint a looker. Seriously for 1000 quid it could be better styled. Mind you I like the built in tha garage look - but only with built in the garage prices!

    Extortionate prices for interconnects.

Hard not to love a good cable wars thread. If you have friends who are not initiated in the ways of 'the hobby' one of the best things you can do for them is to give them a copy of the Russ Andrews catalogue to browse. Hours of amusement will ensue as they gasp at the idea that people pay...

    silent working budget cd player?

I've never noticed any noise from my Marantz CD 6004, but I am an old boy, so maybe not so sensitive. As for streaming being 10 million percent less hassle, I'm afraid thats not been my experience, and my house has a wired ethernet. I've had major difficulties tagging flacs, and have often spent...

I found hifi again after some 25 years

The analogy between hifi and a drug is an interesting one. I read somewhere (Irving Welsh?), that heroin addicts are continually trying to recreate the rush of their very first fix and failing. Chasing an ideal which they never attain. Reminds me of the hifi upgrade spiral!

    DAB radio

I agree with the Major - I listen via a clapped out laptop and a fairly inexpesive DAC. The high quality stream for BBC Radio 3 is splendid. It is the ultimate listening experience - you don't even have to choose the music or get up to change the disks! Heaven.

    new forum

I've got a hangover this morning and looking at this forum is making it significantly worse. Seriously its an appaling piece of web design. Dunno who the got to do it but they should ask for thier money back - assuming it was done by a school kid as part of an ICT project!

    High-resolution audio: clarity or confusion?

CD succeeded because it was something people wanted. Vinyl was a very inconvenient medium, fragile and difficult to store. Also vinyl sound quality was appalling. Remember most people listened to vinyl on a Bush radiogram, not a LP12. So CD was something people wanted, and when the discs and the...

    Test for Golden Earedness

Seems like a very easy test to me. Don't think 100% indicates golden ears - just that you are not completly deaf. I use Linux and there are several ear trainer programs there - I use GNU Solfege - dunno if there are equivalent in the mac windows world, but they are much trickier, asking you to...

Roksan K2 CDS Vs Marantz CD63SE

The cd63se was a benchmark in its time - cd players started out pretty ropey, and the cd63se was one of the first, if not the first, affordable player that sounded really great. So if it sounded great back then why wouldn't it sound great now? Does hifi sound better now than it did? Not a lot to...

    I love compact discs

Just listening to some jazz (Freddie Hubbard Straight Life) CD sounds great vivid and dynamic. Why I love CD - Freddie was part of 25 cd collectio bought for £40. For the same money how many vinyl jazz records could you buy? Also no pops hiss, crackle, no worries about condition or warps. What's...

Small Children & Speakers - Any Advice?

You're worrying too much. Kids cause chaos and not just with hifi. But you tend to love them more than you chattels. So its ok.

Help a beginner! With PC audio

J River and Foobar do seem to be the standard recommendations. I fail to see that the player can affect the sound produced in the end - isn't that down to other choices like the file format, and the dac or the soundcard. I'm not a Windows or a Mac user myself so I don't have a dog in this fight...
