Sorted! Thanks Gray, can't understand why the centre wire was not connected. I can only assume it broke when I pulled it apart. On the other hand that could be the cause of the clicking and noise. I initially put it down to 40 year old plugs. Anyway all good now

The old RCA plugs on my LP12 are 40 years old and are a bit slack so I've bought some new plugs and was going to change them this afternoon. When I started dismantling the old ones I was expecting there to be 2 wires to each plug but there is no wire to the centre pin! Is that correct? I know...

Just a brief update: Pulled the trigger on an Audio Technica AT-OC9XSL. Fitted it this afternoon and initial impressions are impressive. The Cambridge Audio Duo seems to handle it ok although the built in headphone amp is a bit weak but coupled to my Little Dot tube headphone amp it is driving...

Checking the specs of the Linn Koil and it looks as if its a rebadged Audio Technica AT-OC9XSL. Which I could stretch to at £625.
