Rear ported is not nearly as fussy as folks make out. If positioning less than twice the width of the port from the wall, then you probably want to plug the port. Besides that, every other consideration of placement is identical, no matter what bass reflex type.

On my first read through of the OP, I didn't catch that this occurred on two units. My initial thought was maybe the corresponding connector in the socket had lost its springiness over time (as they can do) so wasn't touching. After re-reading, for it to happen on two units was surprising...
