    LG C5 Picture quality

When I get a new TV, I go through the settings - mostly turning stuff OFF such as all so-called AI & motion control! However, there's a couple of settings on LG OLEDs that either can't be turned off or need special access but that's more to do with auto-brightness, IIRC. The Sony sets do have...

    What beats a plasma?

I had a Panasonic plasma for 10yrs - sold for £10 to the dad of a student. Plasma IQ does deteriorate over time that can be partly offset by readjusting. To my mind, OLED is vastly superior tech with true blacks, more dynamic range the availability of far larger panels. Plasma sets had glass...

Any news about 3D TVs at CES 2026?

3d display tech has come a long way since red & blue cardboard cinema glasses! It's never interested me personally "cos I ain't go no 3d vision - those old ViewMaster 3d discs were wasted on me. The only vaguely impressive part of the last now defunct tech was the ability for 2 programs to be...

Hi-Fi Racks has gone into administration

Agreed. From the company who bought them out - Atacama.

What's your best media player on Windows or Mac or maybe even Linux, Android etc etc. ?

Deeply unfashionable - Apple Music on an ancient Mac mini feeding a M-DAC+ via USB-A to USB-B. One reason is much of my music listening is new stuff & wasn't set in concrete when I got married! I'm sure there are other systems that show "similar" music. I did try a free 3 months of Tidal a good...

Spending far more on amp than turntable?

That was Linn's sales pitch when they were only selling turntables! My personal belief is to upgrade the weakest link whatever that might be & only if it improves the sound enough to justify the cost.

Let's have a chuckle but please don't overwork the moderator!

Expectation Bias rears its head in HiFi - thicker cable MUST sound better etc, etc. In. 1990s, I managed to cook the tweeters in my Celestion SL6s. I returned them for repair & was asked if I would like them fitted with an extra pair of terminals for a small extra fee. When I got them back, I...

Hi-Fi Racks has gone into administration

Yes, recently in 2025. I've moved my system from Berks to Sussex & wanted 4 new feet. Contacted Atacama to be told their Hi Fi Racks version was incompatible. I just swapped legs & bypassed the problem. Feel disinclined to buy anything from them!

Let's have a chuckle but please don't overwork the moderator!

One of the most laughable I've seen on FB was small blocks of wood with angled spade connectors you plug into your speaker terminals - I didn't take them seriously enough to note price or supposed benefit. All this stuff is old hat - who remembers Peter Belt with croc clips etc?

Average UK Male Weight by Middle Age now 14 Stone

Mine has dropped to a tad under 90 from 100kgs since 31/12/24. Have gone from pre-obese to overweight. Losing a further 9kg will put me in the |correct| BMI region. Must start early morning cycling again, despite my wife worrying about my safety.

Question What's your next HiFi purchase?

The last item I bought was an Audiolab M-Dac+ soon after launch so about 9yrs ago. My old Mac Mini needs replacing with an M4 version, just not sure when I'll be able to afford one.

What's on your Hi-Fi auditioning playlist?

I generally use tracks that are well-recorded with decent bass. The other important requirement is I love them so the idea of asking others what to play very questionable! I'd never recommend particular tracks for the same reason.

Poor tech quality of most broadcast material

Many here on this forum enjoy 4k & HDR content on their TVs but can't help but notice the comparatively poor quality of many over the air programs. Much stuff doesn't even compare to 720p (DVD quality, let alone 1080p. Not al lot can be done with sub 720p archival material - some upscaling might...

Optoma UHZ68LV vs Sony VPL-XW5000ES demo experience

Good to know I'm not the only one with a comprehensive Hue system. I gave up on the no-battery tap switches. They've changed the design of the dimmers in the last few yrs.

Optoma UHZ68LV vs Sony VPL-XW5000ES demo experience

My flat in Berkshire has motion sensors in all transit areas such as stairs hallways & landings including toilet, bathroom, kitchen & lounge spread over 2 bridges so 8 sensors, 12 dimmers, 1 1st gen tap switch & 20 lamps.
