Hi there, wondering if anyone can shed any light on the following weirdness...

I bought a 360 Elite yesterday and connected it to my KDL40W4500 via the supplied HDMI cable, with the screen settings at 1080p.

Loading up Resident Evil 5 I was prompted to download an update before I was able to play the game, which I accepted. However when commencing play I was immediately confronted by motion judder and 'tearing'. I tried playing with various settings on my TV (motionflow etc) to no avail.

I switched from the supplied HDMI cable to a QED performance HDMI, and then something even stranger happened; my console would switch on, but nothing appeared on screen and my wireless controls wouldn't connect to the box. After much head-scratching and switching of HDMI ports (again to no avail) I switched back to the supplied cable and all was fine again. I then switched the screen settings to 720p and the judder/tearing were gone.

I'm a little miffed as surely I should be able to run 1080p on my TV without these issues? And also, why would my box only work with the supplied HDMI cable?

Cheers....

Hmmm very strange.

What settings do you have set on the Sony and Xbox? I think there are very few 1080p games available. Virtua Tennis is one on the Xbox. The majority are 720p.

I don't think the 1080p scaling from Xbox is anywhere near as good as PS3 to my eyes so I would leave the Xbox set to 720p, and your Sony will do the upscale.

Make sure you have the Game mode set on the Sony.

Have no idea why the QED cable did not work unless maybe it is an older cable with lower spc that 1.3?

Hi,

The download happens everytime you put a new game into the xbox so dont worry about that.

Regarding the resolution i think it might be to do with the fact a lot of xbox games do not have a native resolution of 1080p instead they are upscaled. Maybe your TV will only accept a proper 1080p signal rather than an upscaled one. To be honest i wouldnt worry about it, the difference between 720p on sky HD and 1080p on Blu-ray is massive but the difference between the two on the xbox i doubt will be much difference as is not a full 1080p signal. Just an idea don't know for sure

I run my xbox at 720p on my HD ready TV and am more than happy with the picture quality, just enjoy gaming.

I did suspect it's an upscaling issue, and have to admit, couldn't notice any difference in the picture when set to 720p - apart from the fact the horrible judder had gone.

Thanks for the responses.

I have the exact same setup, but mine is working fine. Mine is running a QED hdmi cable. It makes no difference if the game isnt 1080p it should work fine. Can you explain your issue in more detail?

It does make a difference as if the game isn't native 1080p, it's relying on the Xbox to upscale it if you have the Xbox set to 1080p, whereas if you have the Xbox set to 720p, your TV will upscale to 1080p. Since, as others have said, the Xbox isn't the greatest upscaler, it's very possible that the artifacts being seen when it is set to 1080p are as a result of poor upscaling from the Xbox. When set to 720p, the TV's better upscaler isn't creating these issues so the picture is fine.

Yes and all im saying is that i have the exact same setup and mine is fine.

Could just be you're less susceptible to these onscreen artifacts e.g. motion judder from Blu-Ray 3:2 pulldown doesn't really bother me, but other people find it unbearable.

Personally I find the 360 preforms best when you play the game at its native resolution, say on GTA if playing at 720p the writing on the phone is clearer letting any of my TV's do any additional upscaling as where when set to 1080p there is less definition to the words on the phone and clearly more artifacts due to the 360 doing the upscaling.

Like others here, I use an Xbox 360 Elite with the Sony KDL40W4500 with no problems whatsover.

As I mentioned on an earlier post, I seemed to have some slight glitches when using the 360 HDMI cable between the amp and the TV when viewing Blu-rays/DVDs, but no problems with it connecting the 360 direct to the TV. And I'm now using a Philips HDMI cable between the 360 and amp.

I would agree that you should set the 360 to output 720p (or auto - can't remember if that's an option!), and let the TV do the upscaling. This week, I've mostly been playing Fallout 2 and it looks great, upscaled to 1080p, with absolutely no screen tearing or other glitches.

One other thought: have you tried setting the TV to Game Mode?
