Has anyone compared these two? Both seem to equally well-regarded, though the Wyred seems to have more inputs, which would be useful.

I listened to Wyred 4 Sound DAC1 (modified by W4S with the same passive parts used on the DAC2) and Benchmark DAC1. The former sounds more natural thru the full range.

In comparison to W4S, the Benchmark sounds harsher with "zzzz" female voices. I'm not keen on its top end as well that sound unnatural. The latter is very a detailed and transparent DAC, but it's tonally cold (a bit clinic). The former is as transparent and detailied, but brings details in a more natural, smooth and convincing way. The W4S manages to sound clear, sharp and airy on the high frequencies without being clinic. Moreover, the W4S has a higher dynamic range, faster transient attack and heavier botton end.

Perhaps due to Sabre ESS 9018's characters, the W4S DACs are very accurate as regards tonal balance (neutral). Don't expect it to sound warm with all recordings. Bright CDs will be reproduced in a unpleasant way. On other way, audiophle recordings will be reproduced wonderfuly with warmth, detail and sweetness.
