Like many others, I would like to create a multiroom music system. I already have a few AirPlay speakers (libratone zipp, a couple of airport expresses and a rocki play), so I would prefer not to invest in a sonos system for now. I would also prefer not to have to turn my macbook on every time I want to stream music to more than one speaker.

One option I'm considering is to get a nas device to store my music on. Would this work? Would I be able to stream music from it to more than one speaker, and if so, which nas would be the best one to go for?

Hi Rob

The Synology NAS will do all that you need as comes with an app to control it. You can use several airplay(ers) at a time - limited only by your networks abilities.

Sound quality is great and cleverly it will even allow you to play FLAC and other files over the airplay as you can trasncode on the fly.

Thanks for your replay. That was the one I was thinking of going for, but kept finding people saying it wouldn't work. I think I will go for it then.

Just one question - you say it plays flac files. Presumably it will also play alac, as that is what most of my music is ripped to, as I use itunes?

Yes - it will play ALAC (sorry I assumed that as you're going via Airplay and that's the norm,). It will also play OGG, MP3 & WAV.

You need to load the 'Audio Station[/b]' package onto your Synology NAS via the 'Package Center'.
You will also want to load the 'DS Audio' app onto your phone to control it.

You just need to copy your music files into the 'Music' folder on your NAS and give it a while to index them all.
