It's time to upgrade my system a little after quite a few years via an ebay session. I'd really like to make a difference without spending a fortune if at all possible. I currently have: Arcam Alpha 3 amp Arcam CD72 cd JPW Sonata speakers a pretty basic system obviously but it's given me a fair bit of pleasure over the years but I want to upgrade amp and speakers first, would a Naim Nait 2 or 3 work with this CD player? speakers will come after that... hope u can help. p

I would suggest trying to partner with a Cyrus 6vs or 8vs to compliment the sooth, detailed arcam sound. I use an Arcam 6CD with Cyrus 6vs amp, monitor Audio RS1 speakers and projest expression III turntable.

I find that the fluid sound of the Arcam cd player works well with the fast, lean sound of the cyrus amp and the little monitor audio standmounts fill the room up with sparkling sounds. Sounstage is nice and wide, vocals given room to work, and never boring but also never bleeds my ears with harsh treble. Has enough bass for my 14ft by 17ft room.

What do you like about the sound of the system currently? What do you dislike? And also what music do you listen to?

...what I like about my current setup is that its never too harsh, it's possibly just a little sedate at the moment. I would like a wider bigger more revealing sound if at all possible [ without having to buy floor-standing speakers - the other-halfs orders! ].

I listen to a wide range of stuff, eg:

Radiohead - In Rainbows,
Nick Drake - 5 Leaves left,
Peter, Bjorn and John - Writers Block,
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound.

Thanks guys, I appreciate these responses.

I had an Arcam CD72 partnered with Naim Amp and it worked very well indeed.

I'm running an Alpha six through Naim amps (admittedly a little higher-spec than the nait, but the Naim family all have a similar sound) and it sounds wonderful. so wonderful that I was nearly late for work this morning as I couldn't tear myself away!!!
