I purchased a Toshiba32WLT66 back in 2006 on a 5 star recommendation from What HIFI and have been happy with its performance. I am looking to take the plunge with Sky HD, but wondering whether I need to upgrade my tv to get the best from it. Will I get a good HD picture on this TV, also would the latest 1080p models like the Sony KDL37W5500 be a big improvement. I will still be watching a fair amount of SD material as well as the HD and have read that this can look a little shoddy on these new high spec tv's. Is it best just to stick with the Toshiba for now and upgrade in a few years? Any help much appreciated.

Hi mjenkins, I bought my 37WLT66 in 2006 and have recently subsribed to Sky HD. My tv is "only" 1080i, as I suspect is yours. However, Sky HD is also "only" 1080i ( or 720p ) so your tv is capable of making the most of the sky HD signal. The true HD broadcasts are fantastic and soooo much better than SD.

However, be aware that NOT ALL programmes broadcast on the HD channels are actually HD. You can press the info button on the remote and it will tell you if the programme you are interested in is in HD or not. Apart from that, I can definitley say that I love watching HD tele!

Hi Mark 1,

Thanks for the reply, my 32WLT66 is HD Ready 1080i the same as your 37 inch version. I'm glad you can get a good HD picture on it and you've just saved me £1000

Out of interest what's the SD picture like from sky on your tv, These Toshiba's seem to have good freeview tuners in them, that's what I use at the moment and I'm hoping that the SD pictures from a Sky HD box are just as good or better?

Thanks again for the reply

Hi mjenkins,

Sky SD pictures are pretty much on a par with the Tosh built in freeview. The pictures do look slightly different but there really isn't much in it. The sky box has one (minor) failing in that old programmes that are in 4:3 get stretched to fit the screen (assuming you have the screen set to "wide" ) whereas the Tosh shows the picture in its original format which I prefer. No biggy though, as it is quick and easy to reset picture format on the Tosh remote control. I tend to watch just about everything through the Sky box as I record almost everything I watch before actually viewing it. Gets rid of the horrible "red button" and lets me zap through adverts without being forced to watch them.

Hi,

I have a Tosh 32WLT66 which i use for hi def from PS3 for games and blu-ray. I find that most of the time it copes pretty well with the gaming. But on some DVDs and Blu-ray discs i find it really struggles with definition on really dark scenes.

I agree that 32WLT66 has been a great TV, but am really tempted to upgrade to a sony 40W5500 for the full HD and bigger screen experience.
