Again, that's my understanding of the situation, though I have to say I haven't actually tried it for myself.
But then I have as much interest in 3D as I do in the results of X-Factor or the Papal Visit - well, beyond the fact that driving into the office this morning the traffic was horrendous and the pavements looked like a bizarre mix of Father Ted and March of the Penguins.
That said, there is nothing physically different between a standard HDMI socket and one capable of HDMI 1.4/high-speed output, so it's possible that the PS3 upgrade will make the change to 1.4 in software, helped by the very fast, advanced processor in the unit. But until the upgrade happens, or we get some solid information from SCE, what the PS3 will do, and how it will do whatever it will do, remains to be seen.
Ditto whether it will be able to deliver 3D through a non-3D-capable receiver, and whether that will hold true with all discs, or just some.
The situation with Sky is, of course different, as Sky won't be serving Full HD 3D at 1080p, just as its HD channels don't deliver Full HD 1080p broadcasts, but rather 1080i.
