I have read that Sky 3D will work when sending the signal through a non 3D compatible receiver and all that needs to be done is to tell the TV to switch to 3D mode. Can anybody clarify this for me or has anybody tried this.

Yes it will work perfectly with a older non 3D amp as the actual signal is no differant to a normal 1080i signal, leaving your TV to sort out the passive 3D signal it recieves

why do most reviews i have read say you need a 1.4 hdmi capable amp for 3d passthrough? is it just another marketing ploy to get people to upgrade their receivers? whats the advantage of 1.4 on an amp?

If you intend to "pass through" the signal from 3D blu-ray player then yes you need a HDMI 1.4 compliant amp but the Sky box is not sending a singnal anwhere near that sort of bandwith as from memory the Sky box is HDMI profile 1.1 so a older amp will work fine.

I take it the lower end of the bluray players won't have two HDMI outs? what if I was to use optical out to the receiver and HDMI to the TV? or could you split the HDMI?

If you take optical out, you'll only get standard definition versions of DTS and Dolby Digital, not the HD ones. An alternative would be to buy a player with multichannel analogue outputs, if your receiver had matching mulichannel analogue ins, in which case the player would do the HD decoding and output sound in analogue to the receiver.

Are you sure andrew? i have asked the question on other forums and people have responded saying that they can passthrough 3d via a HDMI 1.3 amp and get perfect 3d picture on the tv.. I am interested specifically in what the ps3 will do - I will be using that as my 3d player so i'm hoping i can route it through my Denon 1909 and get HD audio via the amp and 3d picture on the tv.. i've been told this will work by others. The ps3 (launch models at least) are not HDMI 1.4 they are 1.3 so if they are doing 3d them 1.3 must be able to at least passthrough the signal? Have you done any tests with HDMI 1.3 amps and 3d blu-ray players and 3dtvs to see the results?

I think splitter wont work with 1.3 amp and blu-rays - but might be ok for Sky 3D.
I have tried it with blu-rays Samsung BD-C6900 blu-ray into a Sammy UE46C8000 and sony str-da5400es.
so 1 output from splitter to TV and 1 output to amp, i can get the 3d if i turn the amp off before i turn on the other devices, but when i turn the amp back on it doesnt output the sound, or I can get sound but no 3D

I'm the first to admit, I do not have the best understanding of all this technology.
I have just purchased the pioneer VSX-LX53 AV receiver following What HiFi S&V review and plan to connect it to a Sony KDL-46HX903. I have a Sony KDL-46W4710 TV connected to a Sony DA2400ES AV receiver in another room.
Am I able to connect my sky box to the pioneer VSX-LX53 to get 3D on the sony 46HX903 and use the other HDMI output to connect to the other receiver for the other TV, or will this not allow the 3D to work on the first TV? or do I need a splitter? So confused!
I resent having to pay sky another £10 a month for multi-room, or would this be my only option to get 3D to work with one room and standard HD Sky in the other?
(Like you, and most people I talk to, I also am not bothered about 3D either, but as I am in the market for a new TV, I feel resigned to get a 3D TV incase it becomes the standard, as I don't intend on replacing my TV for several years)

Im expecting sky 3D to work with my 1.3 amp, as it uses side-by-side method, rather than the full 1080p alternate frame in blu-rays.
Wont know for sure though until I get round to trying it - and that will depend on Skys pricing policy.

I have tried this now with Sky using my Denon 4308A (Non 3d) and Samsung UE55C7000 and it works a treat. Sky have a preview chanel which shows alot of nature in 3D and i must say it looks really good, and hopefully it will only get better.
With regard to cost if you have full sky package and sky HD you do not pay any extra to have SKY 3D activated, well not yet anyway.

ok so i wont get full lossless audio but for the odd 3d blu-ray i have.. will be nice to be able to play it without having to upgrade my receiver.. of course it might not work.. so will just have to test (if i ever get my 42vt20)

it will over some! its been reported to work with some amps but not all... Pioneers confirmed to not work...
