They work out cheaper than speakers for equivalent performance.

They are smaller and you can have a collection and take them outside with you.

You can listen to your music whilst others around you are doing their own thing.

You get more intimate with the music and closer to the feeling of 'being there'.

You can have headphones and speakers at the same time, allowing you the conveniences of both and for all to live in harmony with love and peace.

Did just that once many years ago. Forgot my amp doesn't cut the signal to the speakers when you plug in headphones - was blissfully unaware until the flatmates starting complaining

"C'mon, the ship is sinking!"

"Arctic Monkeys"

"No come on, or you'll drown'

"Yes, amazing bass - new headphone amp I bought in Southampton"

"But the ship is - oh forget it, I'm off while I can. Now where's my women and children disguise...?"

visionary:Don't agree about the feeling of "being there" - you can't FEEL the bass with headphones

I find live performances, including where a band is playing live in a studio, the detail that a good set of headphones and headamp can dig up gives me the feeling of being there more than a hifi. With hifi you are aware of the stereo effect which you do not get with live music.

As for feeling bass, Denon AH D1001s or the Sennheisers with a bias towards bass, such as the HD202, not to mention the Sonys with BASS BOOST emblazoned on the box, will give you plenty of low end oomph.

I believe the headfier went down with the ship, how brave.

Whats that the ship is sinking, ponders for a moment and then decides to go down with the ship maybe playing smoke on the water. His other choice would involve being stuck on a dingy with all the women talking his ears off, probably shoes related

Lol, we do but the headphones are there to protect our ears

EDIT: I am more a trainee headfier, I have only had my phones for 3 weeks. A true headfier has multiple sets of phones for all occasions, idc looks to have 4 sets so he must be fully qualified.

i still prefer my speakers! headphones have there place when the noise needs to be kept to a minimum but nothing like rocking out properly and being hit in the chest by those rocking basslines!!!!

Agreed -speakers are more social, but headphones do come in handy when the OH or little'un wants to watch tv.

Ah, and headphones aren't good if the little'un has nits, hence why she uses my old Sennheisers.

realise this is off the point but do the same things apply to headphone cables as speaker cables

also can you change headphone cables for better ones

back on topic i hate wearing the things they give me a headache plus it embarassing singing along on the train

One off, I am not going to answer your question about cables here. We now have a beautiful new sub form crying out fo new posts. Why don't you start the headfiers first cable debate?

Back on topic, I agree headphones take a bit of getting used to because of the sounds in the head, which may induce a headache, but I suspect only with rubbish overall quality, bass heavy or tinny sound. If you are singing in the train, you at least still enjoying the music.

PP - not getting nits is a brilliant reason to own multiple headphones

sorry, but no headphones will ever match something like a set of ditton 66 speakers with a really good strong 200W+ amp ... and volume cranked up

Try producing and mastering any audio track using only headphones instead of decent speakers/monitors, and you'll soon see why headphones most definitely aren't better than, or a replacement for, speakers.....

It might sound alright through the cans, but more than likely wack through a system.

Not to sound harsh, but what is the point of this thread?

Headphones can sound great, and so can speakers. Headphones are cheaper than equivalent SQ speakers, nothing shocking about that. Both have different advantages, disadvantages and their own applications.

It's like saying a motorbike is better than a car.
