Now this is very interesting.. Here we go. I was told to try out a musical fidelity V90 dac & it just out performs anything I have ever used as my source player. Far better than my REGA & M-DAC. Has anyone got one i would like to hear from them.

This little thing is just so good I wonder how this is even possible.

By the way its only £200. Really?

I have one, but I haven't compared it with anything else. Maybe I'll do so.

Anyway, it's great that it works well for you.

Yes I think you should. The sound is just so much more open.. the detail just beat my other dacs hands down. The best part is it does not sound hard in anyway or form.

Good for you, but why has all the reviews put this as a 4 out of 5 stars product?

Are the reviewers so affected by this DAC not being premium price?

There is no reason why a less expensive component should not sound better to you. Everybody has a preferred sound, which is why we have hundreds of hifi manufacturers as opposed to a small set that everybody chooses. Reviewers are the same, so I use their opinions as a guide but not a law. The DAC is one of the simpler components, in that there are only a few hifi quality D/A converter i/c devices which have to be surrounded by just enough standard components to get them working. I recently bought a Beresford, and for less than £200 the difference in sound, even compared to my Arcam CD73T, is remarkable.

Liking a less expensive device is not a crime. Sit back and enjoy the music!

Well makes me question a lot of high priced stuff

I have owned the V90 DAC for a month now and I know exactly what you mean. I had the Dacmagic 100, Beresford Bushmaster and an audio-gd DAC but this one is better than all of them. Just an incredible sounding DAC.

My point is that the placebo effect probably strongly affect the reviewers.

It could be an unfair comment, but I suspect that some reviewers are predisposed towards certain manufacturers. They are looking for certain attributes, but the Emperors New Clothes effect is very powerful too. Do we hear what is there, or what we think is there?

Like Nordorst cables for example?

For the many components that are not audibly identifiable when blind it is not clear to me why some get gushing reviews, some glowing reviews, some the best I have ever heard reviews and some only good reviews. What does a manufacturer need to do to get a best I have ever heard review instead of just a good review?

We certainly do not hear what is there. What we hear involves the sound impinging on the ears plus input from other senses like sight plus what we have learnt. For example, we tend to be lip readers without realising it and this helps fill in what we hear. Similarly we also tend to anticipate words and fill in what we expect is coming.

Out of curiosity how are the SQ of dacmagic 10, bushmaster, audio gd compares among themselves? which one is more musical?

IMO, the Dacmagic and audio gd sounded more or less the same. A very open presentation but both can sound a bit clinical/cold. The Bushmaster sounded a bit warmer and more musical with the same open presentation.

The V90 DAC offers a lot of insight into the music you are listening, you hear so much detail and you get a more layered sound. It also sounds a bit calmer/relaxing than the three DAC's I mentioned before. Perfect for my system.

This is all very personal though..........just my opinion and the way I here it. It's not a fact that the V90 DAC is better than the dacmagic, beresford or audio gd DAC's if you know what I mean ;)

Actually I was thinking of adding a dac to my system, but there is no way to audition it . The thing I am after is a bit more control over the hole music presentation and soundstage. And Controlled bottom for the rock music. Dacmagic is the easiest of the lot to be had, but I am concerned that it will not be good with the rock music that i listen. I live in Kolkata (India) so a bit concern about the custom charge if I order Bushmaster or the Audio Gd. Dacmagic can be bought locally as it has distributers here.

If you want more control I think you can not go wrong with the V90 dac. This dac just out performed my Rega dac which I think is very musical.. Also it gives you layers & layers of the music. If you got the right system you cnt go wrong with this one. For exmaple when I hear a guitar playered I can now hear the rhythm clear & precise with no hit of brightness. Well, in my opinion I think its a steal.

Interesting, so Rega Dac can not compete with the V90? Does the V90 contain a good analogue preamp?

No the V90 does not have pre amp function. fixed output am afraid. Dnt let that put you off unless you really need the pre amp.
