I currently have a Yamaha RXV1400 receiver with KEF iQ5, iQ3, iQ6c and iQ8ds speakers, I'm thinking of upgrading the amp.

On the shortlist I've got;

Denon AVR2809

Yamaha RXV1900

Pioneer VSX-LX51

I've not had any demo's yet but going on reviews I'm favouring the Yamaha.

Would I really be able to tell the the difference in sound between the old one and new one? Have things improved that much?

Anyone got any thoughts.

One vote for the Yamaha RX-V1900 A/V Receiver.

Sonically, I must admit that for lower to mid-priced A/V Receivers, to me, there have not been massive improvements. In fact, some newer A/V Receivers I have listened to recently have gone backwards, I reckon, for 2-channel stereo play-back. The Yamaha's are certainly among the best out there at this price-range musically.

However, surround steering and effects placement have improved quite dramatically, plus, all the new features (especially if you have adopted Blu-ray) make the new A/V Receivers very much worth having.

Dan.
