Was just about to ask what happened to your Oppo Pete.
So you do not have any DVD-Audio discs then?

Although I am sure the Sony BDP-S770 is a terrific player, I will hold on to my Oppo.

TKratz:So you do not have any DVD-Audio discs then?

Yes, but they're gathering dust in the cupboard now I've ripped the hi-res audio element to my PC hard drive.

What do you expect the Sony to do that the Oppo can't?

I'm expecting a better picture and sound with blu-ray, possibly better SACD playback. The built in wifi will be useful as well, it obviously has 3D capability although I can't see me making use of that (quite a few years left in my Pioneer plasma yet hopefully!).

I sold the Oppo for £435, I'll probably get change out of that for the Sony. I'm not expecting massive improvements but I'll end up with change in my pocket and a marginally better, more up-to-date player.

I doubt it, unless of course you use the analogue connections

pete321: possibly better SACD playback.

If you run DSD directly to your Yamaha I doubt this as well.

On the remaining points the Sony of course has the edge.

Hi,

The previous BDP-S760 had really favourable reviews for its picture quality, particularly the way the Super Bit Mapping reduced banding. There doesn't seem to be any mention in the S770 specs of this feature being carried over. Does anyone have any views on why this might be the case? I just wonder if these latest models are being designed primarily with 3D in mind, to the detriment of 2D playback.

What do you think?

Cheers,

MarkP

Nothing to suggest that. The S370 has performed better than the S760 when WHF tested them out, & I'm pretty sure it doesn't have super bit mapping or whatever you call it. The S770 should be an improvement on 2D performance as well.

- I'll look forward to seeing the first reviews when it's available!

Does anyone know if this will be able to be modified to multiregion DVD & Blu-ray? I'm looking for a multiregion Blu-ray player for both BD & DVD and the only one I found that fits the bill so far is the Oppo BD-83 but I would prefer to go for the new Sony if it has better picture quality for both BD and DVD.

I would seriously question that the Sony handles DVD opscaling better than the Oppo.

Oppo contains the ABT 2010 chip for this duty and is generally recognised as one of the best DVD players around.

As for 1080p24 blu ray picture. Well, let's not start that discussion again...

bigboss:It'll cost about £150 to make a player multizone for blu-rays

?53 in the case of the Cambridge Audio machine.

Yes, forgot to mention that.

The main reason, I think, is that Cambridge Audio can easily me modded by the user, while others are more complex requiring professional modification.

Does the fact that this player has component video outs as well as hdmi mean that I can get full HD sound TrueHD etc through my Onkyo 876 hence solving the previously widespread claims that to upgrade to 3D I need to also change my Amp to a 1.4hdmi Amp?

I know WHF say the Pani 300T can do this as it has 2 hdmi outs and the Samsung 6900 nearly does with it's comp outs but they say it has issues with this.

I wouldn't mind 3D but not if I have to buy a new Amp or compromise on sound.

Answering my own question, clearly NO.

I get it now I think lol
emotion-7.gif
it would need to have seperate individual analogue channels for each of the 5.1 channels which clearly it doesn't, or at least the specs on Sony website says it doesn't
