whats best to do the decoding amp or blue ray player

In theory there is no difference as decoding is simply 'unzipping'. That said, I think most people believe it's best to let the receiver do it. Why don't you try both? Don't let the fact that one might be louder than the other cloud your judgement.

I would let the Yamaha RX-V3800 do the decoding.

Btw, an excellent AV receiver which i got to use again at a customers house last night.

That is not true. Decoding is a change of signal's nature - from digital to analog. There is much more electronics involved then only DAC chip, so differences in sound is usual thing. If all it was the same, what-hifi people will lose their job.
