Because of my limited budget whats best....

1x540 cd player + 1x640 amp

or....

1x640 cd player + 1x540 amp

I can only realy afford one upgrade when I buy, so it would be handy to know whats the best option

I'd be inclined to disagree - synergy is what you need; a good blend the sum of which is greater than the parts. Source first and see below for a good example...

640A amplifier with a 340C CD player and Musical Fidelity V-DAC. The 340 with the V-DAC will easily outperform the 640C and having the DAC will give you flexibility in terms of computer based music now and/or later. (Bear in mind that the transport and servo on the 340C are IDENTICAL to those in the 640C).

Assuming this can be done with the same budget, it's a great idea!

Im thinking this might be the better option, I might not buy a CDP at the moment (wait of a few months for some more cash) - I could use the DAC with my ipod untill then :)

BTW...Does anyone know....

If I used a genuine apple Ipod dock, can I connect it to the Dac via USB and have the Dac convert the audio. Or is that not posible with and Ipod, is the conversion done by the ipod?

Can't be done as far as I know. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you'd need something like a Wadia iTransport to get a diital signal straight out of an iPod in PCM format.

Correct. All typical iPod docks have an analog output. The iPOD DAC has already converted the digital info to an analog signal so an external DAC is too late.

At this point, I believe that the wadia dock is the one and only dock that will send a digital signal out so a high quality DAC can be used...
