What would the Awards 2009 be for the best 40-46” screens if awards were in May 2009 and not later in the year?

Like a lot of people on this site I was planning to get the new Panasonic TX42V10 but the review has not gone to plan. And now the big question is what plasma is the best or what are the WHF top three screens around now.

I understand that WHF are not doing the awards until later this year but would it be possible to give the top three screens that are here now.

Also the Pioneer range are now not to be included as both are larger than the 42-46” screens I am looking for. I not saying that its still not the best screen on the market but I feel its time that everyone moves on and looks at the screen that are more likely to be purchased this year.

And as some people (me for one) are into plasma and not LCD does it not make sense to have a top three of each and then an overall winner.

So the top three plasma screens (42-46”) going buy what WHF have been saying:

1. Panasonic 42G10
2. Panasonic 42V10
3. ….?

Top three LCD screens (40-46”) going buy WHF has been saying:

1. Phillips 42PES001
2. Samsung UE40B7000
3. Sony KDL40Z4500

I am sure a lot of people would like to know what WHF feel is there top three screens but we understand that you have to hold out information before it maybe going into an up and coming magazine etc.

And I for one respect the review (V10) WHF have done and if I don’t agree with this review then that would mean its pointless respecting the reviews of any past and present WHF do/done. I have always respected and followed the WHF reviews and still plan to subscribe to the best magazine on the market for audio and visual.

And I thank WHF for the great stuff you all do.

i certainly wouldnt just go on one review , another site has given the v10 a very good rating , last year , panasonics pz800 range was their top model , and whfi ( in their review of the 42pz800 ) said they didnt think it was as good as the sony 40w4500 , now think about this for a minute ,, almost every other review site put the panny way above the sony ... and bar the kuro , whfis lcd sets get better ( in general ) praise than plasmas , now most other review sites are different , and plasmas are normally favoured , ( again , in general ) im not stating a fact here , or insinuating anything , im just saying , if you like plasmas , dont lose heart over whfis review .... it is their opinion .... just as they were very negative about the sony w5500 they tested , , other reviewers were very positive , saying it was better than last years w4500 whfi award winner ?? ...... its all about opinions ...

At the risk of being accused of not answering the OP's question, we're right in the middle of the TV model switchover period right now and there are lots of new sets we haven't tested yet. Which is precisely why we won't pick the Award winners until later in the year.

Still if you're looking at plasma, and knocking Pioneer out of the equation, then the Panasonic TX-P42X10B is the standout best-value plasma at the moment (only £700), although of course it's HD-ready, not Full HD.

If you want Full HD plasma, then the Panasonic TX-P42G10 offers a great combination of features, value for money and picture quality. Good as it is, we don't think the TX-P42V10 offers a big enough step up in performance terms to justify the extra £300 outlay, unless features such as THX and DNLA are important to you.

Things get more interesting on the LCD front (40-46in), with the Sony KDL-46WE5, Sony KDL-46Z4500 (soon to be replaced by the Z5500), Samsung UE40B7000/7020 and Philips 42PES001 all scoring highly.

But one clear overall winner? Not there yet.

fair play for replying andy , i think what most people want to know is ,,, does the v10 produce a better picture than the g10 ? even if you need to use thx mode to get it , price aside , is it the same or better ? in your opinion , im not sure if i want it to be , the g10 is 300 cheaper afterall , but if its better ( picturewise ) even for the xtra money , i want it ....please ?

As I said in my previous reply, we don't think the V10 offers a big enough step up in performance over the G10. And we found it less impressive with Blu-ray pictures than we'd expect of a set costing £1500. Even in THX mode.

sorry andy i didnt see your other reply , ill take your opinion on board , i was hoping given panasonics ties with pioneer that the v10 would be on a par with the kuro , maybe the old saying applies , i taught you everything you knew , but not everything i know ...

I'd say don't bother with any of the above - go for the Samsung LE40B650 which is about 2/3rds - half the price of most of the other TVs mentioned. (£750 online)

I saw the B650 and the LED 7020 running side by side and there's absolutely no difference i could spot. Most of the reviews online (Home Cinema Choice / HDTV test / HDTV.org) also say its an amazing TV.....whathifi yet to run a review for some reason though.

you can also get the 46'' version for £1000 online at Crampton & Moore with a 3 year waranty, which im guessing will be of similar quality.

Ive seen the Sony Z series running and yes it looks very smooth with the 200HZ motion, but frankly youd be bonkers to spend an extra £600 on it.

I've got a mate with a sony W2000 from 3 years ago and when i go round to his and watch SKy HD football on it it looks brilliant. There's really no need to break the bank on LCD screens anymore - the premium products just do not represent value for money.

Thanks Andy (WHF)for answering a question I know is not going to be answered really until Later this year.

I have seen the review of the 50V10 and it does look great. The other factor for me is not only the image it shows but I also want the screen to look great on my wall and the V10 like the Phillips are at the top of my list.

i agree totally , ive seen the b650 next to sony w5500 and g10 , all showing hd , and even though i slightly prefer plasmas , i thought the b650 looked brilliant , to be honest though theres not much in it to my eyes , and i dont know how they were individually set up ,i had seen the sony before that elswhere and i thought that was fantastic , but for bang for your buck the b650 looks good to me , even my own panasonic th46pz8b looks great though , if i had the money id just buy the kuro and know i had the absolute best , until something else came along

the one thing that put me off the b650 was the review I saw giving a really bad gaming lag......if it wasn't for that issue I'd have beeb very tempted.....if anyone has a B650 and plays cod4 onlinr would be great to get your feedback

I have to agree with one of the posts above in that any of the tv's mentioned when properly set up and fed the same feed would give a fantastic picture.

The rest is looks and extra features, I wouldn't feel I'd made the wrong choice with either of them. I have a 7020 (also a Kuro) and love the media capabilities - it has taken over from my PS3 as my media player, which I think is a cool feature. I also like that it is super thin. That said the B650 is a great screen and in capability is as good but wasn't around when I bought the 7020 and is not ridiculously thin (an observation not a criticism).

I play COD4 online and with a properly calibrated Game Mode I notice no lag and I tend to finish top 3 without fail in Free for all, lag would be apparent but then I don't know how the 7020 compares to the B650.
