Hello,

I now own a brand new Rega RP1 + performance pack with my Rega Brio3 and my Monitor Audio BX2.

The sound is nice for Jazz and Folk song but as soon as we get to symphony or some complex piano, that sounds harsh and fuzzy.

I bought the RP1 because I though that was because of the ARCAM rDAC and everybody told me go black, vinyl rocks but I still feel in a box.

I heard about bi-wiring but also read that BX2 becomes even more dis-organized so what could I do ?

If I need to upgrade speakers, what's best choice to match my Rega setup ?

(looking for colorful, warm sound).

Thanks,

Rega Speakers should give you what you're looking for, as well as Kef R100s...provided they are within budget.

You must listen for yourself though.

Just my opinion ;

I've had the Brio 3 for a while and it was not good at all. Not powerful enough and a harsh sound.........a sort of 'metallic' sound. Sounded awful. Not a good amp at all.

You can change the speakers but I would change the amp. Buy a Marantz PM6004, NAD C326BEE or Pioneer A-30 and the BX2 speakers will sound awesome.

Maybe a Brio R would be better, so an amp change rather than a speaker one?

Well, I hope the Brio-R is better than the Brio 3. I have not heard the Brio-R so I can't comment on that.

Edko has to decide what to do...........I'm only giving my opinion :)

As a previous owner, your opinion may well be more relevant / helpful than mine.

Hello Cypher;

I'm surpised by your comment about the Brio3.

The procedure I followed to choose my setup was :

1. the amp

Apollo CD + KEF Q300 const.

Amp variable :

- NAD C326BEE

- Marantz PM6004

- Rega Brio 3

- Cambridge Audio don't remeber what in same tag price

- Moon somthing

By far the Brio3 was the most musical to me !

2. the source

Brio 3 and Q300 const.

Tried a few CD players then the Rega DAC (amazing) but too expensive so I bought the ARCAM rDAC.

I see CD players as obsolete hardware.

3. the speakers

- B&W 685

- Quad 11L

- KEF Q300

- Monitor Audio BX2

- Monitor Audio RX1

- etc...The dealer was telling me take the Q300 but the BX2 that day sounded clear and detailled, musical.Since then once at home on long listening sessions I found them harsh on symphonies and piano but nice on jazz and songs. Will listen the R300 soon, we'll see... At the time (a couple of years ago) the R series didn't exist.I'm wondering about the Tannoy since what hifi recommended them last year ?Budget not the issue as soon as we don't go crazy...Cheers,

I've read that the Rega RS1 speakers work well with the Rega Brio 3 amp. They could be worth an audition to see what you think of them.

I did not like the RS1s with the Brio R, so best to audition, they sounded closed -in and veiled the B&W CM1s were much more open. I would try the Kef R100s or Epos Epic 2s.

I found the Rega Brio3 likes easy to drive speakers, it even went quite well with the ATC SCM10, but the best I used it with was Regas own R1. So either the older R1/R3 or newer RS1/RS3 would be my choice :)

The Brio3 deserves better than the MA speakers IMO.
