OK, have had some good help from guys on here and just wanting to make sure i don't buy something i don't need. I am getting a 42" Panasonic, tannoy SFX 5.1 speakers and PS3, using IPOD for music.

Last thing is the receiver, i know i only get stereo from my IPOD so anything will do for that, on the TV and movie front i want HD audio, receiver also has to have a FM/AM radio. PS3 will upscale DVD to 1080p so upscaling is not an issue. Is the Onkyo 606 more than what is required, someone suggested a Sony 720 rather than a DGR 820, the 820 write up says it doesn't have multichannel analogue inputs, what are these for? I am not really into all this stuff but don't want to get something that can't do what i want and also don't need stuff i ain't going to use.

Hi,

Go for Onkyo 606. It contains all you need. Best with Tannoy systems.

Multichannel analogue inputs can be used with Blu-Ray Disc players with onboard decoding and multichannel analogue outputs, as an alternative to an HDMI connection for audio

Onkyo 576 might actually do the job since you just need an amp that will do LPCM over HDMI for your HD audio. Also worth trying on get a deal on a 605 if you don't need more than two HDMIs. The Sony DG820 is also definitely worth considering as it looks really good for the price.

OK, well i am only going to run a PS3 and Sky HD through the receiver so don't need more than 2 HDMI in ports, 605 can do all the HD audio stuff. The Onkyo 605 or Sony 820 it is then, anyone got experiences they would share, both are about the same price.

One last thing, have read the 605 is not so good at music playback, can anyone confirm this, also what is a pre out required for?

What is the difference between HD audio and true HD audio. Is there anything the 576 will give me that the Sony won't, and vice versa.I have been thinking about the fact the sony can't upscale, but i can't think why i would need this as i will have a PS3 for this, what would i need to upscale that couldn't be run through the PS3. Have decided i won't spend more than £300 on a receiver so this rules out the 606,1909 etc, i'm not into this stuff enough to make use of something too expensive, i also don't want something that i have to tinker with everytime i put something on.

I think that's just confusion over terms. HD audio is a general term used for any of the new sound formats being included on Blu-Ray discs (and HD-DVD discs in their day). These include a few formats including uncompressed PCM soundtracks, or lossless compression solutions like Dolby TrueHD (which I think is where the confusion is coming from) and DTS HD Master Audio.
