If it's a macbook pro, yes, the headphone socket is an optical out. Agree with DavieCee that an Apple TV is a better value solution now than an airport express now (especially if your hifi is anywhere near your telly), and I consider Airfoil to be mandatory - I listen almost exclusively to Spotify -> Airfoil -> Airport Express -> NaimUniti.

Sheesh I am losing the will to live now...

Taking a more pragmatic aproach, the only sensible way to buy something this expensive is from a reputable retailer, and new, which means that the mac becomes less attractive again. Plus I discover many more photographers using PCs with HD screens with a high degree of sucess, at least no worse than using a macbook as after all a laptop is a laptop with its inherent limitations of screen size etc. I am still not convinced by the build quality of the higher level Dell machines, so am now considering a Sony Viao - has the spec of the i7 macbook but at the same price of the 13" version, plus the benefit of a true HD 16" screen

Now, how does a squeezebox fit into all of this - as in what does it do?

See, told you you should buy a desktop :)

If it helps, when I had to spend my *own* money, I bought a Vaio laptop and have been very pleased with it - at least 400 quid cheaper than the equivalent macbook, and had both Photoshop and Premier (Elements versions) thrown in. Battery has pretty much died on me now though, about two and a half years on.

A squeezebox is just a client for your music library and internet radio.

Now what if I tyold you I had bought a Mac?!

I am speaking to you from the hugely spaced keyboard that is a viao VPCF12S1E/B, such a sexy memorable name huh...inital impression are that anyone over the age of 50 is going to struggle with a screen of this size and resolution, the text is tiny. Mind you red looks like red at last! Right, back to the music....

OK, I have completed my gateway review, and have now got the source sorted out including all the peripheral activity that a computer should do, I now need to start the next phase which is to get the music streaming operational. The tasks as I see them are:

1. Sell the CD6SE which will go on the bay at the weekend.

2. Decide what siftware to use in order tp play tracks. Options I know about are:

- WMP never been that impressed with older versions, not sure how lossless their lossless files are...?

- iTunes: currently my preferred chouce because I know how it works, and that it works well. Its a doddle to add music to the library, burn discs, sync tp ipod etc. Not sure how accurate a CD rip is though.

- Spotify: not that impressed actually, it won't play around 1/3 of the imported tracks I have as it doesn't recognise some of the file types (my HTC desire, WMP has no problem with the same tracks) + some major bands are not accessible online.

I have EAC installed to rip cds but not sure how this integrates with itunes (or whichever software I use).

3. Buy a DAC. Because of budget limitations, this will have to be a used example, the obvious choice is a Cambridge Audio DACmagic, but are there any other budget options I should consider?

Now I can use a USB cable to start off with, or perhaps an optical link (what cable do I need to search for?) but I would like to go wireless for less critical listening sessions when I would also like to use the PC remote from the DAC. - whats the best way to do this, again cost effectively? For serious listeining, I'm happy to use a cable connection as I wont be using the computer at the same time, but I'd like to be able to listen occasionally when using the laptop.

If you like itunes you may aswell carry on with it.

But why would WMA Lossless files be less than lossless?

On the basis that each bit of software converts the file into its native extension, so how lossless is lossless..??

OK, think you've gone over my head now, but why not ask the same of any other lossless format?
