I have a laptop running windows 7 64bit which I use to stream my music to my Chord Chordette Gem DAC. All of my music is apple lossless I'm currently using itunes. However I can only select "direct sound" using itunes (under quicktime preferences) as "windows audio session" is not currently available with 64bit windows 7 I'm told this should sound better is it worth changing music player?

No - assuming that iTunes sends out the music unprocessed. But you can try it yourself for free. I mostly use MediaMonkey and can compare wasapi, direct sound and waveout - to my ears they sound identical. Waveout is the only output plugin good at playing gapless. Foobar has the best wasapi support, also gapless and really quick. I just can not get used to the logic of foobar though (like the way playlists are done), tried several times to like it.
