i ive posted a similar post before but im looking for a definitive answer

Basically what needs to be spent to better a sony 370 blu-ray player?

Maybe im a bit of a snob but ive enjoyed seperates for years safe in the knowledge ive got something that little bit better than whats available in the local branch of comet. And secondly i hate how it looks, i love the denon stuff and old school other DVD players that used to exsist 5 years ago but all the stuff lately looks too poorly built and very commercial. about a year ago i replaced my old denon 2910 dvd player with a sony 550 blu ray but have never really been happy just seeing it sat there in all its plastic glory, despite it offering a solid performance.

So in simple terms what gives better picture and sound quality than the 370? Does anything exsist under £500? Does a Denon 2010 come close is the denon bt2500 dead and burried??? Maybe im getting old and holding onto the past but cant we have players like we used to where better build actually meant better performance????????????????

I don't think you can criticise products for being 'too commercial' - they are, after all, made by massive corprorations in business to make money, not spread the love.

But to answer your question, I'd say something like the Cambridge Azur 650BD would be an obvious step up, assuming you also cared about playing CDs, hi-rez audio discs and the like...

I got mine for £99 in a local branch of Tesco (I find Comet is a bit posh) then plugged it into a Naim seperates system as soon as I got it home.

It is exactly the same width as my Naim NAT05 FM tuner (or "BDP-S370 stand" as it is now called.)

If I could chuck a Naim UnitiQute into a trolley - with the groceries - at my local Tesco* (and get the same sort of discount I got with the S370) then I would be very happy!

*Imagine the Clubcard points!

i agree im not wanting to criticise them, im just confused as to why anyone would spend £400 on something like a Pioneer or Denon player that may be built better but ultimatley gives no better performance.

i would be interested to see a what hifi supertest feature with a new V old machine, it would be interesting reading, is a £100 sony 370 player really better than a Denon 2500 that cost £900 i its day 9 (and still sells for around £450 now)? I know there are other factors such as cd play back but it would be good to see comparisons in all the areas.

No it is not. I own a Sony 370 by the way. The Denon DVD-2500BT is the best blu-ray player I have ever seen. It will beat the Cambridge Andrew mentioned for outright picture and sound quality.Infact, for under £500, nothing will better the Denon.

However, you must also be aware of it's shortcomings. It is a Profile 1.1 machine and loading a disc takes ages compared to the S370, it is a Transport only and it does not have any fancy gizmos, BUT at the end your patience is rewarded by it's truly fantastic picture and sound quality.

I stand corrected. Thank you for your superior insight...

Sigh, Ronald Archiebald (isn't this full name thing really weird?): I just wish I had the access you do to so much equipment for extensive, and extended, testing. Then I could make the kind of definitive statements that come to you so easily...
