What is a 3D ready TV?

When 3D tvs are talked about , is there just one standard for the TV signal or are there competing standards out there? In other words are we going to have a 3D format war ,or will new formats come along and make the first range of 3D tvs obsolete?

Also what is the difference between an HD TV and an HD 3D ready TV?

I think that although televisions from different manufacturers may use different systems, the actual software - 3D Blu-rays etc - will play on any system - otherwise there would have to be Sony 3D Blu-rays, Panasonic 3D Blu-rays, etc, and that would be madness!

Personally, I think that if 3D television does take off, then in a few years' time we'll be told we need to upgrade to a better system (glasses-free, or whatever).

HD televisions can display high definition, but you will need a HD 3D set to display 3D images.
