What does backlight bleed look like?

I have a Panasonic 32LXD700 and, on the whole,it is a great TV. However, I can often see light 'seeping' through in the top left hand corner of the screen during very dark scenes. I looked at a blank channel and , during the evening, I can see what looks like a slightly lighter 'cloud' in the top left hand corner (can hardly see it during the daytime)although this can lessen sometimes and the whole screen can look lighter. It doesn't look so bad close up but is definitely visible from about 8 ft away. I am beginning to dread programmes with dark scenes! Not sure whether there is anything I can do about it? Or is this just normal backlight and the problem is down to poor blacks in the programme?

Would so much appreciate advice please! Especially from owners of this TV.

I have been told that the backlight should be completely even but, from a distance of 8 ft, mine isn't. It does seem to be close up though

I am completely confused as to whether I have backlight bleed; uneven backlight; or just poor black levels?

Someone did suggest turning down the backlight using the service menu (why can't this be done via the normal menu like other TVs?)but not sure whether this would help or invalidate the warranty?

Hope someone can help as this is really spoiling what is otherwise a great TV!

Bringing this back up to the top!

I know now that is definitely backlight bleed. The TV guy is going to come and see it but during the day when it isn't so noticable

Just wondered how common this is and is any brand more prone than the other?
Would you put up with it or ask for a replacement? Of course,I am worried that the replacment may be even worse!!

Hi Scotsgirl,

I finally got round to checking out the backlight in low light for you. I can't see anything untoward on my telly so it does look as thought you might have a problem with your set but it's hard to say. The blacks are one of the this telly's slightly weaker points but the rest of the picture quality outweighs it, I think. Sorry if that's not much help!

Hi Bascule

Many thanks indeed for checking that out for me and I am so glad that yours is fine.

Was the blank screen completley uniform?

I totally agree with you in that the brilliant picture makes up for the blacks. Hopefully I will get this problem sorted out and then it will be even better!

I am just happy to have a picture at all just now as Freeview went doolally yesterday. I was afraid I would miss the SCD final!!!

Thanks again and Happy Christmas!

Liz

Yes, pretty much. If anything it looked very marginally darker round the edge but I wasn't sure if that was just the shadow of the raised edge of the frame round the screen. I couldn't discern any unevenness. I get the impression you've had a few problems with your freeview reception so I wonder if you have a bad signal and the telly is struggling with that. What does your signal strength/quality look like in the tuner settings? I'd be interested to know what your "TV guy" has to say.

The signal strength and quality is all fine now. Think it was the weather which caused Freeview to go doolally!

I have contacted Panasonic but haven't heard back from them yet.

I was told that turning down the backlight might help but you need to do this through the service menu and not sure whether this would invalidate the warranty?

It seems to get better the longer the TV is on so will leave it on longer over Christmas so I can enjoy the festive programmes.

Thanks Bascule!

Thankfully mine is a lot better now and the blank screen looks practically even . I take it that the screen won't be black but has a slight 'glow'?

I can see the slightly darker edges as well and this can be seen as a very light grey on light scenes in normal viewing. Not sure why?

It is a great TV though and if the backlight bleed improves even more then I will be well chuffed!
