The guy I sold it to wants to plug the port up with a sock, will this cause any damage? Will there be any benefit?

He thinks it will hit lower if he does this. He's obsessed with getting to 30hz, the sub officially goes to "35." Is building a lower tuned cabinet possibly a better way of doing it?

He plans to run the thing at the 3am volume setting for hours on end. I have a feeling it might overheat, having said that I ran it at 4am for 6 hours once on compressed music and its didnt, but the port was open then. It cant really be damaged by overexcursion I gave it loads of abuse of back plate slapping and it still works fine.

Thanks for any help. The reason I/he abuse(d) what many may consider to be a fine budget sub is because it cost me £20, and I sold it to him for £15. When you consider what the alternatives are at £15, I hope he doesn't blow the thing.

He doesn't have the money for another sub. The £15 was a stretch...

i will spoil it i tried that sort of thing with cheap sub so maybe the whalfdale might do a better job with that , but i would just stick with the 35hz and enjoy it. for £15 it was a bargin and he could do alot worse. He wants to feel more so i try putting the sun head on and with a big slab under it. and see if that helps and try to turn it full volume but on the lowest 35hz and he wont hear much which will fool he into thinking hes feeling more. imo just play around and see what happpens.

cheers, in the end he decided not to port it, but while messing around we found the amp clips/the excursion is limited by the port resistance before max excursion (couldn't tell which), so we butchered the bottom to create room for a new port, and latched 4 road cones and some plywood together to create a folded scoop creation thing with a calculated tuning of around 27hz. Its now 5 feet tall and 2 across but we measured 112db at 30hz in room (which is higher than the spec spl at any frequency - 107db)...this is what students are really useing their degrees for...he is a happy bunny. Odly the amp seems to be running cooler now than it ever did.

it really does look stupid though..

Well,I'm sure it's a relief to get that cleared up....the whole thread seemed out of the "Twilight Zone". 😉
