Hi, can anyone advise me as to why I am unable to buy War of the Worlds on blu ray? I mean the new version. Not the Gene Barry version from the 1950's

And while Im asking, can Forbidden planet be obtained on blu ray?

Thanks

Allegedly Warner are going to release Forbidden Planet in September this year.

Also Dreamworks are supposed to be releasing War of the Worlds (Tom Cruise version) at the start of June

These are US release dates.

Granted, the ending is a bit pants, and there's a few far fetched bits in it, but other than that I think it's actually a very good film, certainly one of TC's better ones along with Magnolia. The effects are first class - the initial destruction scenes are very convincing, and the scene in the basement were they hole up with Tim Robbins is excellent. Also, the scene where they're hijacked for their vehicle scarily shows the human race for what it really is. Quite an eye opening scene that one, because you know that IS what would be happening.

Andrew Everard:Oh, I just can't get over the fact that the performance of the lead actor comes up short...

But isn't that always TC's problem - hence the lifts in his shoes.

FrankHarveyHiFi:Granted, the ending is a bit pants,

What, all the aliens catch a cold and die? Well that IS what happens in the book. Other than the time and spatial transplantation it's actually reasonably close to the book, with the red weed and the feeding scenes etc.

and there's a few far fetched bits in it,

What in a film about an alien invasion? Get away...

but other than that I think it's actually a very good film,

I didn't mind it at all but then I'm generally ambivalent to books being changed for the cinema, whereas some people get really upset. I'm a huge fan of Asimov but I wasn't even bothered about the changes to I, Robot, just regarded it as a different interpretation of the source. I don't remember anyone complaining about how different Total Recall was from "We can Remember it for you, Wholesale", or Blade Runner from "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?". Come to think of I can't think of any **** novel that hasn't been changed quite a bit for the screen but you don't hear Philip K's fans ranting and raving about it...

I just meant the hurried ending, and the fact that the main character is the one that points out the aliens shortcoming - like the Army wouldn't have noticed.....

Well we don't really know that there isn't anything out there, so we can't really say that an alien invasion is actually a far fetched possibility :)

I don't think the MI films are that bad or Legend, Rain Man and The Colour Of Money.

My taste in films is not the greatest. These days my quality rating for a movie is if I'm still awake at the end.

This version is often irrational. As but one example, why exactly have the Martians already parked their machines under the earth 'a million years ago'? Why not travel to earth then, and take it over before humans even evolve, if you already have the technology to get there? What's the million year wait for? A worthwhile scrap?
