The Denon DM38 would be perfect for my kitchen if it had an optical input. Source is Airport Express. CD player optional. DAB preferable.

Any suggestions?

You're not gonna find one (yet, if ever). Closest you will get is something with iPod integration.

On the plus side, an Airport Express won't sound half bad on its own.

Having said that, I'm making assumptions about your budget based on your mention of the DM38 - a UnitiQute would be perfect (if somewhat more expensive).

I was sure I'd seen an Onkyo mini system to match their digital transport,

but it doesn't look like the X-S1 is sold in Europe

This should do the job

Thanks for the help. The Harmon Kardon looks nice, but too expensive for the Kitchen really. The Onkyo looks ideal... but unavailable

Guess I'll stick with the analogue output and the DM38. Shame, because the step up with a half decent DAC connected to the airport is vast. I think that the manufacturers are missing a trick here.

The home cinema centre (Edinburgh) have it listed on their website.....

The analogue out on the AE is not too bad Just moved mine from the front room to the dining room on to a denon UD-M3, sound is pretty decent.

My onkyo cr 515 mini system has an optical in and I believe it works with the airport. It is an old model now but they come up on e-bay every now and again. Great little mini system too!

My bad. I only looked at Onkyo Europe's homepage. As others have commented, other Onkyo's may also have this feature, so it may also be an issue of product lines named/numbered differently in different markets, so it is probably worthwhile speaking to Onkyo dealers, etc.

Ummmm, Onkyo 725DAB. In my opinion sounds better than the Denon (had the DM37 as well), has optical input, and none of the annoying humming or hissing issues that seem to affect the Denons.

Don't think many places sell it now, but you can get it for under £200 new if you find it.
