been thinking about buying the sony 820 but out of stock every place, should i wait or get Onkyo TXSR506 the set up is for sky hd and bluray, theese recivers are in my price range many thx

This depends on the specs you want, since there's a pretty big gap between the 820 and 506. The Sony will not only accept Linear PCM (from a PS3, for instance) but it will also decode HD formats like DTHD and DTSHD-MA onboard. The Onkyo will do neither.

So it really depends on what you want - if you're only after basic surround, the Onkyo will serve you well. But for similar money, the Sony will go one step further and give you HD audio. To me, it's a no-brainer - wait for the 820!

I already did a thread like this

I decided not to wait and got the 576 from play.com for £250 the same price as the 820.

The 505 seems closer to the sony 520 (no audio over hdmi)

it sounds very good with the only drawback being if i decide to get a bluray player i have to make sure it will decode the audio on board as the amp wont decode the true hd audio but will playback 8 chnl pcm via hdmi.

The 576 accepts audio over the hdmi for 8 chnl pcm (for a ps3 or a samsung bd-p1500) i feel that the 576 is a closer match to the 820

I read the manuals for the two

http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/3289450431.pdf sony str dg820

http://www.eu.onkyo.com/dl/1039962/TX-SR506_576_En_A.pdf onkyo 505/576

Also to note the functions like the auto volume leveling / start up volume attracted me to the 576 plus i could have it now.

Hope this helps
