Have a Sony BDP-S360 and a Samsung 5 series HD LCD 37" TV, how can I tell which is upscaling DVDs?

I know the Sony displays HDMI and HD lights - still how can I really tell?

You need to go into the set-up menu of the blu-ray player and set the output resolution. If it's set to 1080p, DVDs will be upscaled by the plyer. If you set it to 576i or p, the TV will be forced into doing the upscaling.

im sure i read a review of samsung tvs where it stated that their tvs take the incoming signal and upscale it using their own programs irrespective of the incoming signal being sent upscaled or not.not sure if it applies to all their tvs .

Im afraid thats impossible in some cases. You cant upscale an already upscaled 1080P image. A 768 panel would have to upscale or downscale, maybe thats what you ment?

Just remember that upscaling does not turn dvds into hd,or sd pictures to hd,you only get hd pictures with blu-ray(full hd) or sky hd/virgins v+hd box(hd-ready).dvds and sd are just that.Upscaling only fills the screen.Or to place the pixels/lines that the tv/or player thinks that should be there.alot of the public can get confused by this.

Yes I'm aware of that, but which HDMI setting is best on my BDP-S360 - Auto or 1080p?

My telly is a full HD 1080p set.

Set S360 to 1080p and make sure overscan is turned off on your tv (if you have that option)
