As promised here's an update on our situation with the LZD800.

We were looking forward to a new LZD800, but unfortunately, when it arrived this afternoon, there was a question mark over whether we were actually being given a new TV or an ex-display model based on a number of things i.e. incorrect box, no clear plastic film around TV frame, bits of white fluff stuck in speakers where it had been dusted, conflicting stories from both store and delivery people. After a couple of 'phone calls to the store, one by my husband and then by me, in the end we decided to get a refund.

So, because we feel this is a trust issue now, we decided not to go ahead with their offer of their equivalent new model TV.

We're extremely dissappointed about how it was handled in the end, but we're now left with a TV stand with no TV on it and now the problem of which TV do we go for now? It'll either be a Sony or we'll just have to wait for the new Panasonic models and get one from a different store rather than the Panasonic shop.

Any suggestions on what would be a good replacement TV would be really appreciated, either 37" or 40"?

In a way it's a shame this hasn't worked out, but in another way, consider yourselves lucky that you have the choice! It might seem a disappointment, but at least buying from the Panasonic shop has got you to the stage whereby they have accepted your dissatisfaction and refunded you - many others it seems do not get that choice from certain retailers.

My own feelings on this are to wait and see what Panasonic offers in the near future from their new range. Sony are getting great ratings, but I've been a Panny TV fan all my life and I would always give them one more chance to wow your socks off before defecting!

Just my opinion of course

Hi Professorhat,

Thanks for replying. I think yesterday we were just a bit at the end of our tether, given that it's been about 6-8 weeks of dissatisfaction since we received the TV. Given that many others do not get a choice, I suppose we are lucky. Also, it is unfortunate and unfair when certain other retailers do not take the concerns of their customers seriously.

Unfortunately or fortunately we defected today and took the plunge with a Sony

. In spite of the review given on WHFSV, we've plumped for the Sony 40W5500, as I decided to see it for myself and spoke to the Sony shop about concerns over clouding. Like you, we've always been dedicated Panny fans, and we still love our 26" Panny LCD.

Comparing the Sony W5500 with our ex Panny TX-LZD800, I would say the Panny was definitely better at SD and sound quality, while the Sony definitely has deeper blacks. In all other respects though, I would say the Sony is exactly comparable, plus we're getting a bigger set for £50 more. Delivery will be in 2-3 weeks. I'll post a thread to let you know how it goes. Hopefully the new TV will be fine, but if any issues do arise, then I also hope we will recieve the same good customer service from the Sony shop
