Thanks Andy. You say " unless, that is, the video upscaling built into your flat-panel TV is truly appalling." What if this is not the case, but the the scaler in your AMP is condsiderably better than your TV? Would it be a case of the best scaler wins the day? And does a good quality scart generally provide a better picture than a good quality s-video cable? Thanks again.

HD Elvis:Does Sky HD actually have a dramatic improvement in p.q on a 768p fixed display.

Yes; running Sky+HD into an elderly Fujitsu 50in at home, and it looks excellent.

I'll let you know the results of my extensive testing with my £3.99 s-video cable in a few days when it shows up! By the sounds of it, I should've saved my money and bought this month's mag instead! Thanks for all the help!

Just on the Sky+HD upgrade thingy, I have Sky+HD I wanted to add a multi-room subscription with another Sky+Hd box, willing to pay the extra monthly subsricption for multi room & HD mix, Sky sales excepted the order.

But after being emailed to say my registration needs to be completed to give me an installation date, they would not let me pay the £49 previously agreed, they wanted the full price of £199, needless to say, I still only have one box.

So it is available to existing sky+ customers, just not sky+hd customers who want another box. not good

Hi,

Is the 876 one of the models with HQV? If so then it'll walk all over your TV's internal deinterlacing and scaling. You've really only got three options. The cheapest option is to buy an S-video cable. The more expensive option is to convert the RGB + sync signal that the Sky box outputs over SCART to YPbPr component, using a box like this one:

http://www.futureshop.co.uk/qed-scart-rgb-to-component-video-adaptor-p-399.html

Neither of these options is ideal. The third but most expensive option is to buy an external scaler from the likes of Optoma, Crystalio, Lumagen or DVDO. These typically support RGB + sync input using a SCART to 4 RCA or BNC cable. This will take your nice clean 576i Sky feed, deinterlace it, scale it beautifully up to 1080p and then output it over HDMI / DVI to your Onkyo or your TV. With the exception of really low bit rate channels, it'll look much better. There's an Optoma Themescene HD3000 going cheap on eBay right now (mine):

Prepare yourselves as this may shock a few people!!

My s-video cable turned up on Saturday, so I wired it from the sky box to my onkyo 876, upscaled the signal to 1080i, and then to my TV via HDMI. The difference was not even close. The picture is far superior to scart from sky directly to tv. This was confirmed within 2 seconds by my wife, 10 year old and 6 year old who don't care a jot about saying something to please me and tell it like it is.

100%, the picture was vastly improved, leaving me very happy!

Hi,

Re: SKYHD - this is available to non SKY customers and existing SKY/SKY+ customer who are upgrading to SKYHD for the £49 offer price.

Current SKYHD subscribers do not qualify for this offer price. Current SKYHD customers will more than likely have had their 1st SKYHD box at an offer price and therefore do not qualify for a 2nd box with a subsidy.

The offer is to attract NEW customers to SKYHD rather than reward loyalty to those who already have it.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

By the way, I have also tried using a moderately priced S-Video cable instead of an expensive IXOS RBG Scart to get a picture from Sky+ to the TV (Sony KDF50E2010). S-Video upscaled via Onkyo 876 was a much better picture, richer colours and cleaner edges.

Onkyo 876 *so* deserved 5 stars...

My dad also used an IXOS RGB Scart lead (45 quid ish), then upgraded to a Russel Andrews video only RGB Scart.

In both cases using his Pioneer tv to do the upscaling and with the RA cable it looks better than ANY SKY+ picture ive seen (In fact the Pioneer engineer that came round commented it was the best HE'D seen and he'd seen a LOT)
