He's 85 years old, not very mobile and loves films. He has a library of about 250 DVDs and about 50 BDs, all genres, but finds the act of faffing around with cases, discs, BD player etc fiddly. So we've ordered him a 3TB HDD which he can use with his Samsung smart TV to stream his films.

Of course there's the catch of having to rip his films to the drive to start with. Guess who's got that lovely job.

I’ve checked his telly’s manual and it’s happy with NTFS and exFAT drives and MP4 films, so hopefully no problems, though I will try it with a couple of films on the drive before I start ripping in earnest. One minor issue, I don't have any method of ripping his BDs. Well not a legal one anyway. Cross that bridge etc...

I've already warned my poor worn-out USB DVD drive that its services will be required again. It's currently in semi-retirement after ripping over 600 CDs to my network drive earlier this year.

The things we do for our loved ones, eh.

Hmmm...not going there Prof lol. I don't advocate piracy, and I've even tolerated being called 'pompous' and 'self-righteous' by several forum contributors after lambasting one of our regular posters who is quite open about the fact that he routinely downloads films illegally. However, as these films have at least been bought fair and square and will not be shared, then rightly or wrongly my conscience is clear. ;)
