Universal DVD Player Recommendations...?

Hi All,

My DVD player seems to be giving up the ghost so I'm looking at a replacement.

The new player needs to be able to play my SACDs and DVD-As (so Blu-ray isn't an option yet)

I'd like good stereo sound as well.

Budget would be up to around the £400 - £500 range

Any Suggestions ?

I'd buy one of the Oppo machines - they start at around ?169 for the DV980H.

Pioneer DV LX50 OR Oppo ????? Think Messiah and Andrew E can tell you more about them from a personal point of view.

Blu-Ray is an option with the new Oppo BDP-83 which also plays DVD-A & SACD.

It's currently only available from the UK in as a US import on sale from CRT Projectors. However, they do sell a hardware modded version for £599 which can play all region/zone DVD's/Blu-Rays. He's got so many orders at the moment for the modded version, he's not taking any new ones this week.

Some have concerns that the manufacturer, Oppo, will not warranty the modded machines, although CRT seem to have a good record on support. Oppo are likely to bring out a European version, but there are rumours that the initial machine will be a cheaper, stripped down machine, i.e. no SACD/DVD-A. Who knows, I've ordered the modded multi-region/zone machine, should have it by the end of the week.

Anyone consider it worthwhile looking for something on the 2nd hand market ? Arcam perhaps ? Wasn't there a Marantz that was highly rated a year or so back ?

I think the Pioneer is an excellent player for DVD playback but as for the SACD skills I could not comment as I have not tried it I'm afraid (I own 1 SACD!). I run the Pioneer using the Optical output into my Beresford DAC. (It has also been discontinued

)

The Marantz player I think you are after is the DV7001.

If Mr E recommends the Oppo then give it a try.
