Do any of the What Hifi team who tested the TX-P42X10B know how its sd performance compared to the older TH42Px80 standard definition performance?

I can't say I've looked at them side-by-side (our PX80 was gone by the time the X10 arrived) but I've spent a good bit of time with both and I'd say the X10 has the slight edge. It's by no means perfect - poorer-quality broadcasts can look a bit of mess, especially with motion - but by prevailing standards it's not bad at all. Colours are particularly nice.

Thanks Simon. Always helps to have people who know what they're talking about on here!

Thank you Simon and Andy.

I am not clear given Simon's comments that upgrading from the CRT will be a good move given that all we watch on it is standard definition.

Which CRT do you currently have? If you only watch SD material, it may well be fine - depends on whether or not you plan to upgrade to HD TV or Blu-ray at any time.

We are lucky enough to have an "entertainment" room which has our HD stuff (projector, PS3, pre and power amp, 5.1 system, record player (!) DVD/CD player) and a front room where my parents usually watch a lot of the cookery / asian channels from normal Sky box (where the CRT is).

I was thinking of upgrading the CRT to a flat panel but from looking at the performance of various flat panels recommended by What Hifi in shops I don't think any of them (for SD broadcasts) match the CRT.

I suppose the CRT makes the best of the poorly encoded SD broadcasts from the Sky box.

That was what I thought and was the reason why I held off from moving away from CRT for so long. In the end I wanted to go for a bigger screen and the only way was to move to plasma. SD was my priority as it is what we watch the most and I am not disappointed in the Panasonic. If you are happy with the size of the CRT and it is working fine I would suggest you keep it. If you genuinely want to go bigger then I don't think you will go wrong with either the 37" or 42" Panasonics.
