Tv with no bells and whistles

I am looking for a 55-60" screen, but as I do not have an aerial or satellite dish I do not need freeview, I also do not need internet usage or fancy features, basically I am looking for an HD monitor. All my input comes from a VM Tivo box, Bluray DVD and media player all linked to my network. they all feed with the audio via my Onkyo Amplifier, in effect the TV is fed by a HDMI in only.

What you are asking for tends to cost more because they are a niche product built for industry / commercial applications where onboard tuners and apps etc. are not required but where reliability (for 24x7 use) and toughness of build, wider range of operating temperature, wider viewing angles etc. are at a premium.

Example...

I have seen in the reviews this one given 5 stars and rated best 55" by WHFI for 2012

Sony Bravia KDL-55HX853

Why not pick up the latest issue of WHF?

What? Actually buy the magazine when everyone here can just tell you for free? Are you insane? NOBODY buys the magazine! See that other thread where the geezer is criticising the magazine for not reviewing the quality of Movie soundtracks and then admits he never reads the mag when it's pointed out they DO comment on the quality of the sound...

Well, I must be mad then, because I do buy the physical magazine, I like to be able to read it around the flat or on the bus without squinting at an electronic screen all the time. I get What Hi-Fi on subscription. In fact I must be doubly mad because I also get Home Cinema Choice magazine on subscription, so there! Lunatic asylum, here I come!

Which other thread was that, precisely? I've not seen it.

Or the other geezer who just keeps getting 3 copies for £1 and then cancels his subscription!

Tries to.

Otherwise that would make an annual subscription £4! And never works out like that, normally a pound and then £22 and then they let you cancel.

Will you be gaming on the display? I think the general advice is that if you do a lot of gaming, to maybe avoid a plasma TV and go for an LCD instead.

By the way, I think that you'll be toiling to find a good 55"-60" television for about £1k. Oh, sure you can find one for that money, but I don't know how good it might be. Then again, it could be good enough for what you need. The only one that I can find that comes close is the Samsung PS60F5500, which is quite good but, like its 51" version, struggles in bright rooms. You can access several rewiews online if you put the manufacturer and model name into google. There is a review of the 51" version in the new (October 2013) issue of What Hi-Fi, but according to The_Lhc you won't be buying the magazine, you'll have to read the review online!

[UNPUBLISHED DUPLICATE]

Firstly I have a subscription to what hi-fi.

I have been looking now at some of the newer Bravio's in the 55" range about £1400

It looks like tvs are going the way of the mobile phone, does everything, when all you want is to make a phone call!

The_Lhc was making a joke - there does seem to have been a couple of threads recently where people could have easily found the answer to their question by simply picking up a copy of the magazine, so it's a reference to that.

Most plasma owners would disagree with that general advice.

Funnily enough, I was going to post the exact same question this week. All I'm looking for is a high quality big screen to watch movies on. Seems odd that you have to pay a premium NOT to have 3D, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc etc etc. :wall:

Like phones, TVs are going the way the market dictates. Build a phone today that doesn't have a camera, app store, music player, web browser etc. and you'll find most people leave it on the shelf (yes, I know some people will buy them, but they're in the minority now).

Most people when they buy a new TV want some sort of built in TV tuner, and they also want "smart" functionality. And some even still want 3D god bless 'em. So manufacturers who build TVs without these features will find they're qiuckly left behind by the competition and soon going out of business. Since they're building many more TVs with these features compared to without, the cost of producing them lowers, so they end cheaper than the more niche versions without these features, which are effectively just monitors.

What about this Samsung?

Slightly over budget but can't see many good Sony's at £1500.

£1600 for this one:

A couple of people have bought the Samsung's on here and are happy.

The OP is looking to spend about £1000 ...

I suppose about a grand

That is why I suggested looking at the WHF? test of 50inch+ TVs for less than £1000 featured in this month's issue. (Yes I know it was a stupid idea - thanks The_Lhc - but I have had excellent results in the last 10 years with my selections from WHF? 5 star + award winning TVs and DVD recorders and PVRs and Blu-ray players.)

I'm out of this one. Good luck ianj74.

First of all, what's with the new avatar, professorhat??!! Trying to confuse us, huh? It nearly worked, too!

I didn't realise that The_Lhc had a sense of humour! I still wish that you or he would give me the titles of these other threads though.

I'm happy to stand corrected about which type of TV is best for gaming. I thought that the potential problem with using plasmas for gaming was the chance of image retention, because some logos are on the screen all the time? I myself don't game at all, despite having four plasma sets, so I must have misunderstood what others had been saying.

Hmmm. I did suggest the Samsung PS60F5500 plasma, which is available within the OP's one grand budget, for instance from John Lewis, here http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ps60f5500-plasma-hd-1080p-smart-tv-60-inch-with-freeview-hd/p517070 and also reviews of the set are available on google.
